The King of Auto Racing: Richard Petty

The National Association of Stock Car Racing has been one of the leading organizations that has governed the sport of auto racing. NASCAR has been a force in racing since 1948 and has created a number of stars that became known by the millions of fans. Drivers such as Fireball Roberts, Red Byron, Ned Jarrett, Dale Earnhardt, Bobby Allison and many more. However, the most prolific driver in terms of wins during his NASCAR career is Richard Petty.

Born in North Carolina in 1937, Petty was destined for a career in auto racing. One of the pioneers in NASCAR and auto racing was his father, Lee Petty. Lee Petty along with his brother and cousins started racing in the early days of NASCAR and paved the way for young Richard to become one of the most popular and race winning drivers of all time.

During his career, Petty won the championship in the top division of the sport a record seven times. Over his career won 200 NASCAR races, including the Daytona 500 a record seven times. In fact, during his career he was one of the most dominant drivers in history, and in 1967 won 27 races in a row.

In addition to the exploits of "The King" Richard Petty, the Petty name has been in racing for over 60 years. From the driving career of father, Lee Petty to Richard to son, Kyle Petty, the name has been a part of the sport through generations. Today, the Petty's are still involved in an ownership capacity through Richard Petty Motorsports. And, the racing community will always consider Richard Petty to be "The King of NASCAR".
