Research on Struts for Volkswagen Beetle
Struts are a part of the suspension system that a vehicle like the Volkswagen Beetle uses, to maintain car stability on the tarmacked roads, in rough terrains and it also serves in the provision of comfort to the vehicle users. The Volkswagen Beetle is one vehicle that is close to the ground than other vehicles, so, the struts need to be strong enough for the vehicle not to touch the ground. The struts and the shock absorber are normally positioned close to each other mechanically, because they complement each other. When the shock absorber fails, the strut supports the vehicle for a short while before the owner of the car replaces the struts.
How to place new struts in a Volkswagen Beetle
Using a set of power tool and a jack, raise the bettle high enough to remove the wheel. Once this is done, you will need to remove the bolts that are holding the strut and the steering knuckle together. After you have separated these two components, open the hood of the car and loosen up the bolts that are holding the top part of the strut, but do not release the center bolt. If you do not have compression springs, you will need to call a mechanic to help you with removing the center bolt. If you have the compression spring, you will hold the spring in pace so that it does not damage anything next to it.
After removing the old spring, install the complete struts unit back to the steering knuckle, return the bolts and tighten them in a slight way as to allow slight movement. Place the strut into its tower and place the strut tower back to its original place. Using a wrench, tighten the strut as you secure the strut assembly and the steering knuckle to the original position. Return the wheel of the car and tighten the bolts with the fingers before you start lowering the jack. Remove the jack stands and once the Volkswagen Beetle is back to its original height, tighten the wheel as much as possible using either a wrench or a power tool. Also, tighten the bolts on the strut tower and close the hood. You will need to perform a final check on test driving the car, at a very low speed while listening to any sound in the area you were working on. Avoid traffic areas while test driving and after that, make sure that you take your vehicle for wheel alignment.

I bought one of these to replace my left strut. Once installed, it became apparent my right strut was none too healthy and it's bad enough now that I'm about to buy another. - Good product

Install was a little tricky, save yourself some trouble and use a puller to separate the axle from the hub assembly. Youtube vid shows a guy tapping the hub off, that's not gonna happen... Raised ride height 1.75 inches, car rides like a new one now. Thanks PARTS GEEK... - 02 VW Beetle
