Research on Struts for Mercedes S550

The Mercedes-Benz name is an old and grand one, but there is a bit of an illusion connected with it. It is true that the company has a history of creating fine quality cars and trucks and other vehicles, but it is a mistake to think of Mercedes-Benz as a luxury vehicle maker: the company makes all sorts of cars, from entry-level compacts to moderately priced family sedans, to trucks meant to work in quarries and gravel pits. You can always expect a high-quality vehicle from Mercedes-Benz, of course, and if you ever see an old Mercedes S550 for sale, don't be surprised at the high price, because quality costs money. The suspension systems on any Mercedes-Benz vehicle are consequently very good ones, and they can easily go for years without wearing out. The S series from Mercedes-Benz has been the company's flagship series for several decades, now, and as you might expect, the struts on a sporty coupe and a leading example of the company's work will provide outstanding service for a long time. Still, struts do wear out, or take damage, or totally break down, and when that happens, you will a price for the excellent quality of craftsmanship on your new strut.

When Struts and Shocks Go Bad

May people know what shock absorbers are for, but they get confused about struts. What is the strut assembly? The struts are the parts that connect your Mercedes S550 coupe shock absorbers and wheels to the rest of the car, via the framework. These parts need to allow the wheel to react to objects by springing away from them, while at the same time not allowing that springing to bother you, and also while keeping the precision alignment and balance of the wheel consistent. That's a lot to ask from any part, but the nice thing is that shocks and struts have been designed over the year to do all these jobs very well. Maybe too well, because many car owner tend to ignore the condition of their shock absorbers and accept bumpier rides as their vehicles age. This is a mistake that will increase the wear and tear by a huge margin.

The Numbers on Struts for S550's

You don't need to skim through the Mercedes S550 wiki to know that a Mercedes Benz part will cost more than a domestic part. How much does it cost to replace struts on a car? You can probably get the best possible price by trying an online parts supplier like PartsGeek.com. If your replace both sides of the front struts, you will pay around $2759 to $3441. A single replacement in the front will be $1429 to $1784. In the back, a single will be around $1606 to $2010, and a pair will cost around $2991 to $3737.

Managing Expenses on Your Mercedes-Benz

There may come a time when you give your car an annual examination, and if your Mercedes S550 review reveals that the coupe needs a new set of shocks, its time to spend some money on some imported Mercedes-Benz parts. You could simply replace a single strut, perhaps the one that seems to be the weakest, but be aware that any mechanic will recommend avoiding single installations. The best price options for new struts is to install them in pairs, which avoids problems with alignment and balance and keep the expense down to a reasonable level. Be aware that although struts and shock absorbers tend to be considered as a unit and sold together, replacing struts is a much more involved operation than simply replacing shocks.

This replacement strut is perfect in every way. Simple, straight forward replacement. Make sure to remove the nuts on the top BEFORE you install the strut...or you'll end up doing a bit extra (see unnecessary) work.

Your mileage may vary, but I'm in Los Angeles and their shipping was amazing...had it next day (probably because there is a warehouse nearby).

Shipping core back was a bit pricy...USPS charged me $45. Factor that into the price.

These struts are fantastic. Remanned by Arnott and like new at a 1/4 of dealer price. Pricey core charge but the process has to be kept going. No core return info with part. Have to contact Parts Geek for info. Have not gotten that far yet. Good service on processing purchase and fast ship though.
