Research on Struts for Chevrolet HHR
Having a Chevy HHR struts problem can potentially be a very big deal. This is because struts are incredibly important to the performance and operation of any vehicle--most certainly for a truck. They impact the ride stability and load capacity of all vehicles. While struts work similarly with shock absorbers to help stabilize the vehicle as part of the suspension system, it is important to note that these are very different parts that do very different jobs.
What is the Strut Assembly?
Specifically, struts are a part of the vehicle's suspension system and are mounted to the chassis. While shock absorbers do basically a single function--they keep the car or truck from bouncing around. This is all well and good, but struts are much more multifaceted. Struts look like a typical shock absorber but wrapped in a coiled spring for extra support. Struts are responsible for maintaining the height of the vehicle, effectively hold up the vehicle, and are where coil springs are mounted--and they do so at a typically lower initial cost.
Worn Out Struts
Chevy HHR front struts are the typically go out first (as opposed to HHR rear shocks or struts) as they take the brunt of any turbulence felt by the road. While struts are characteristically viewed by mechanics to be relatively long-lasting and durable pieces of a truck's structure, just like anything else, they are bound to wear out eventually. In terms of replacement, some experts advise replacing your struts somewhere around the 50,000 mile mark. Others argue that anywhere between the 60,000-100,000 mile gauge is closer to the truth. Mileage, however, can sometimes be a tricky thing to ascertain, particularly if you didn't buy your HHR brand new. In this case there are a number of signs you might look out for in order to determine whether or not your struts are candidates for replacement.
Signs of Wear
First of all, as struts are hydraulically based mechanisms, hydraulic fluid will often leak from struts that need to be replaced. Look along the top and sides of the struts to determine if any such liquid is present. Any experienced mechanic should be able to spot this oil, even if it is sparse. Another quick way of determining the condition of your struts is to push down on the hood of the truck. If everything is A-Okay with the struts then no bouncing will occur. However, if the truck continues to joggle up and down a number of times, there is more than likely a worn-out-struts situation going on. Uneven tire wear is another point of concern, though this could be a sign of a host of specific suspension problems. Again, any qualified mechanic should be able to diagnose things further.
Chevy HHR Struts Price
An entire front end strut replacement for a Chevy HHR will likely run somewhere in the $442-$600 price range. Single side strut replacement would be closer to $246-$331.
