Research on Steering Rack for Dodge Ram 1500

A pickup truck with a busted steering rack is no picnic to drive, if it's even possible at all. Your truck carries a lot of weight, so you don't want it to be a road hazard. Even its cargo can become dangerous if you lose control and crash. There are a few telltale signs that the steering rack is starting to go. It takes a qualified expert to check into the problem to make sure a new one is needed, or if the symptoms are being caused by something else.

Signs of a Steering Rack Problem

A common symptom of a bad steering rack is if the vehicle wanders. This will happen whether you're going fast or slow. Holding the steering wheel tighter and constantly having to correct the truck's direction are not normal. It might seem like an alignment issue, but if the tires are wearing unevenly on the inside or outside, the steering rack is likely the culprit. A 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 rack and pinion leak means you are losing power steering fluid; if it drains out, then the risk of serious damage to the system is high. A shaky steering wheel, especially when moving at a high speed, is another steering rack symptom. If the response is limited at the center of the steering mechanism, that's a sign of trouble. You'll hear unusual clunking, thudding, and knocking while driving, which mean you should have a mechanic check it out right away.

What Is the Power Steering Rack?

It is a rack that sits between both front wheels. Where the steering wheel column meets the rack, you'll find the steering pinion, a gear that connects the shafts of the system within a steel tube. A pump drives hydraulic fluid at high pressure through the system every time the wheel is turned. On each end, the rack is connected the wheels via tie rods.

2008 Dodge Ram 1500 Steering Rack

Somewhat Satisfied

Couldn't believe that I found this product online for the price I did. The dealer wanted to charge me almost 4X what it was here. The only thing I am not huge on is the core charge. I understand that the item can be rebuilt and sold as remanufactured, but I lose most of the core charge because I have to pay for shipping back.

Now I'm very satisfied with the product but trying to get a hold of parts is absolutely frustrating. I've called and called and called and waited on the phone for laterally for hours. I've filled out their customer service form and it hardly ever works. It seems to me these people are way under staffed or are not interested in building a customer relationship. I hope my issues with them get resolved if not I will spend my money else where.
