Research on Shocks for Volkswagen Beetle

The newest Beetle's masculine stance presents a body that's longer, lower and broader than that of the previous generation. Inside, the friendly flower vase and distant windshield have been replaced by a more perpendicular windshield and dapper, color-coordinated dash panels. The cabin is roomier and more attractive, despite some of the hard plastic moldings. How the Volkswagen Beetle drives depends on the engine. The base five-cylinder is vigorous, but sounds unrefined and gets unremarkable fuel economy. The 1.8T mid-year replacement looks to be the superior choice in terms of power delivery, refinement and efficiency, with fuel economy to the tune of 40 mpg. The Beetle R-Line, meanwhile, has plenty of punch and sounds great. On the downside, the Beetle's steering and handling are not especially engaging. The R-Line handles better, but not significantly so. If you're looking for a VW GTI with more interesting styling, you'll be disappointed.

Although we cannot control the conditions of our roads, we can be more prepared for them by replacing our worn-out shocks, which affect your Beetle's steering, tire wear, and responsiveness. New shocks and related suspension components improve your Beetle's ability to maintain traction, and help it respond to quick turns and emergency stops. If you notice bald patches on your tires, excessive oil seepage, a spongy feel and slow recovery time after driving over large bumps, or sharp knocks that make you feel you are crossing railroad tracks, it is time for new shocks.

Do I also need to replace my mounts, stops, and boots?

When a shock begins to go bad, the seals may begin to seep oil. This oil leaks onto the bump stop and begins to eat away at the rubber foam material, diminishing its ability to perform its job properly. If the bump stop isn't replaced, your new shocks might bottom out, causing internal shock damage and premature failure. Leaking shock oil can get onto the dust boots, causing the rubber to deteriorate and eventually rip. Ripped dust boots allow road grime and dirt to contaminate the shock, scarring the shock shaft and seals. Replacing the boots protects new shocks from dirt and dust. New shocks also need new shock mounts, as they are made of rubber and eventually collapse and deteriorate. This is especially noticeable in the front of the car since it supports the engine and endures the brunt of road impact.

How often do shocks need to be replaced?

There is no set mileage guide to determine when the shocks need to be replaced. However, it is good preventative maintenance to have them inspected for damage every 50,000 or 60,000 miles. You should also watch out for leakage. An oil leak may be visible on the ground under the vehicle or on the shock itself. To test if air-filled shocks are leaking, fill a spray bottle with soapy water. Spray thoroughly, then watch to see if air bubbles seep from the areas that have been sprayed. If so, this is a good indication of an air leak.

What is the Volkswagen Beetle shocks replacement cost?

At PartsGeek, you can spend anywhere from $14.98 to $55.98 on Monroe replacement shocks for your Volkswagen Beetle. The $32.98 option should meet the needs of most Beetle owners, but the $55.98 deal offers several extras, as well as a limited lifetime warranty.
