Research on Shocks for Ford Mustang
The Ford Mustang front suspension consists of a double ball joint Mac Pherson strut with stabilizer bar while the rear is integral-link independent with coil springs and stabilizer bar. Shock absorbers reduce the bounce you get when you hit a bump or drive on rugged and rough terrain; they help smooth out your ride. This offers comfort, but more importantly, it keeps your tires on the ground, which improves your control and handling. It also affects your steering and braking. As a result, shock absorbers make your truck not only more comfortable to drive but also safer.
In addition to a reduction in the truck bounce your Ford Mustang shocks and struts reduce the roll or sway when changing lanes or managing tight curves and bends. They also help prevent excessive reduction in performance with brake dive; when the front end dips during braking and acceleration squat; when the vehicle's rear end dips during acceleration.
How do Shocks Work?
Wheel bounce causes the piston in the shock absorbers to force oil through a valve, which absorbs energy to reduce the bounce or rebound effects. All of this takes place within a tube that houses a piston rod and compression valve. Steel discs and springs help vary the speed the valve moves at across different road conditions. The more intense the bounce, the more compression within the shock.
All of this compression produces energy in the form of heat. The oil within the absorber is designed to keep the performance consistent, even though the temperature changes. The oil is sealed within the absorber and is protected from dirt and other contaminants with a shield.
Under extreme conditions, the molecules in the air and oil can separate. This is called foaming. Foaming can adversely affect performance and handling on the road. To prevent this, premium shock absorbers add a nitrogen gas within the tube. Thus, gas pressure shock absorbers add a level of performance and safety to your vehicle.
When to Replace Your Mustang's Shocks
The life expectancy of a shock absorber is dependent on the number of miles your vehicle has been driven, and the conditions those miles were under. City driving on straight level highways will cause less wear and tear than country off-roading with many bumps and turns. Signs that your shocks need to be replaced include; when your vehicles mileage over 60,000. If you notice three or more bounces when you hit a bump while driving. To test this, you can exert pressure to a corner of your vehicle while it is parked on level ground, and note whether it bounces more than once. Excessive rolling of your truck and leaks from you shocks are other common indicators.
Replacing your Ford Mustang Shocks
Replacing your Mustang's shocks might be the best decision you make if your ride is not as comfortable as it used to be, if your mileage is around 60,000 miles or you are experiencing leaks from your shocks. It is advised that you replace your shocks in pairs for uniformity and also if one needs replacement the other may be nearing the end of its life. Shock absorber replacement generally averages from $337 to $547 though this highly depends on your vehicle and where you will be doing the replacement. Front shocks for 2000 Mustang will cost you between $364 to $583 if you are doing it in Los Angeles. Got a great price and a great ride with these shock absorbers! - Tim
The air shocks are easy to install. Placement of the air valve requires a hole to be drilled, but you choose the location as there is a generous amount of airline provided. I placed it behind the center, lower edge of the rear license tag. It cannot be seen there with proper placement, and it is easy to access for checking pressure or adding/removing air from the shocks. While replacment of the rear leaf springs may be a better choice, these are an inexpensive alternative to replacing the sagging rear leaf springs on the rear of the Mustang. Since you control the amount of pressure added to the shocks, you also control the ride height. - J Jones
