Research on Shock Absorber for Ford E150 Econoline

A shock absorber is a versatile part that keeps you ride smooth. There's little thought to it if the shocks are working normally. If a shock absorber leaks or wears out, it's not a problem that goes by unnoticed. The van will become a rickety old machine. You can, however, give it a new lease on life by replacing the affected shock absorbers. Owners putting off repairs because of the expenses can find solace by shopping online, where prices tend to be lower than at retail stores.

Signs of a Bad Shock Absorber in Your E150

The initial signs of a problem include vibrations. These are caused by lack of fluid control, due to a bad valve or piston seal. The piston then overreacts to any bump. This can be felt in the steering wheel, and you may also notice the vehicle swerving in response to the extreme movement. The weight of the vehicle will shift during turns, more than it should, if the shock absorber isn't providing enough support. This same effect occurs with braking. The van's weight will shift forward more than it should; a nose dive is the result. Also the brakes will be less efficient, taking more time to stop the vehicle and increasing the stopping distance. Ford ED150 or Ford E350 shock replacement may also be needed if there is cupping in the tires or fluid leaks.

Why Shock Absorbers Fail

Fluid leaks can drain the oil that the piston moves against, affecting how the device reacts to horizontal forces. Bad seals can drain fluid or lead to a lack of pressure. The bushings located at the shock absorber's attachment points can crack. In this case, a tapping sound may occur as you drive over bumps.

How Do You Change Shock Absorbers?

The van has to be parked on a level surface, and then the retainer nut can be loosened. With the van on a jack, loosen the bolts on the bottom of the part and remove the old shock absorber. Ford van shock replacement should be done by someone with experience, because proper installation means they will function as they should.

Recall

The 1991 Ford Econoline was recalled for a faulty rear shock crossmember that could affect the rear shock absorber. Dealers replaced the crossmember, which could crack and separate from the van frame, with a high-strength steel part.

Cost of E150 Shock Replacement

A set of rear shock absorbers on a 1995 Ford E150 costs $156 to $247. That's a little lower than front replacement struts/shock absorbers, which run from $174 to $281. Prices differ by model year. In later models such as the 2010 E150, both shock absorbers will set you back $270 to $382. Regardless of your van's model year, or if you have Ford E350 shocks or ford E250 shocks, PartsGeek.com has the part numbers at lower prices than at traditional brick and mortar stores. Our overhead is lower, and are will to help customers save is strong, so you spend less cash on fixing your ride.

The Monroe 58605 (load leveler, rear ) where what I wanted for my 1998 E-150 Chateau Ford Van.

( 123K mi )

However I was concerned that the upper shaft with the threaded portion for the nut seemed to spin fairly freely, so I put a lock nut on each shock to prevent the nut from coming loose.

Getting them off was a real pain.

I am pleased with the Monroe 911128 front shocks for my Ford 1998 E-150 Chateau Van. Ride was made better as these were installed with Monroe Load Levelers on the rear. However I was concerned that the shock stems and nuts were pretty free so I put a lock nut on each shock to prevent coming loose.

Pain to take off.

KYB shocks Rock! Great shock for the price! The parts Geek saved me over a hundred bucks, based on what the parts houses wanted for same product. My van does wander, is not affected by cross wind. Has a firm predictable ride.
