Research on Radiator for Mercedes 300D

The Mercedes-Benz W189 model 300 was a four-door luxury tourer produced by Mercedes-Benz between 1957 and 1962. Marketed as the Type 300d, it is sometimes identified as an Adenauer, after the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Technologically advanced, the type 300 shared numerous design innovations and mechanical components with the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, including engine, suspension, and chassis. Designed to give reliable service under prolonged use, the engine featured deep water jackets, thermostatically controlled oil cooling, copper-lead bearings and a hardened crankshaft. With no natural cruising speed, the car could sustain anything up to its maximum speed all day. The combination of a rigid X-shaped ovoid steel tube frame and four-wheel independent suspension provided nimble handling. Double wishbones, coil springs, and a stabilizer bar were used up front and Mercedes' typical double coil spring swing axle in rear. An innovative dashboard-operated rear load-leveling suspension engaged a torsion bar to increase stiffness when needed, and a pedal-operated central lubrication system quieted friction points.

A car's engine has numerous moving parts, and where there is movement there is friction, and friction creates heat. Motor oil is pumped throughout the engine block to provide some lubrication, but not enough to overcome all the excess heat energy, so normal operations can result in overheating. This is where the radiator system comes into play. The engine block must be kept cool to avoid problems like overheating. If the pistons cannot slide freely in their cylinders due to excessive can result in friction, they will eventually snap and cause total engine failure. To prevent this, a mixture of water and anti-freeze is pumped through chambers in the engine block to absorb the excess heat and draw it away from vital areas. When this superheated engine coolant exits the engine block, it returns through a large rubber hose. As the coolant navigates these nooks and crannies, excess heat is drawn out through the walls.

By the time the superheated engine coolant has made its way through all the chambers, it should be cool enough to make a return trip through the engine block. If anything goes wrong with the radiator itself, such as a leak or broken hose, the operating temperature of the car can reach a dangerous level within minutes. This can be catastrophic if neglected. If your top radiator neck breaks off when you are cruising at highway speed you can quickly lose all your coolant.

What causes radiator failure?

Use only the Mercedes engine coolant. It contains additives that control Ph factor in the water. When the Ph factor is uncontrolled, the coolant can cause deterioration of the radiator's plastic. Another cause of failure can be the narrow Mercedes hose clamp that, if. If that clamp is overly tightened, will put undue stress on the neck.

What preventative measures can be taken to ensure the radiator's neck does not break?

Epoxy a copper or aluminum sleeve inside the neck.

What other radiator related problems can endanger the vehicles engine?

The rupture of one of the large oil cooler lines can easily ruin your engine. When one of these lines goes, you can lose all your engine oil in just a few minutes.

What is the Mercedes 300D Radiator replacement cost?

Replacement radiators for the Mercedes 300D are available from PartsGeek at prices ranging from $134 to $220.

Reviewer: Pretty Good Copy of OE Behr

Copy of OE Behr in pretty much every detail. On the one I received the left plastic loop/ cavity where fan shield clips in needed to be cleared out with an xacto knife due to excess plastic in hole. Despite that, seems to be of pretty good quality for the price. Not sure on the longevity, as I just installed it.
