Research on Radiator for Ford Mustang

The simple job of your Mustang's cooling system is to maintain proper temperature by removing more heat than the engine generates but not too much. Older and newer models are different in that regard. For example, a 1966 Ford Mustang radiator needs to maintain a coolant temperature of between 180 and 200 degrees, but later model engines need a steady 95 to 200 degrees because of their electronic controls. For Ford Mustang radiator replacement, there's a rule of thumb that you can never have too much radiator. It's crucial that it be able to maintain a conservative engine temperature no matter how hot the day is. A periodic Ford Mustang radiator flush is good preventive maintenance. When the core of a radiator becomes corroded and crusty, its cooling ability is greatly diminished. The engine will run hot, and its lifespan will be shortened. The coolant you use should be a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and distilled water. Tap water may contain minerals and contaminants that can build up in the radiator and its cooling passages.

Problems To Look For

That 66 Mustang radiator mentioned above, like the ones on other early classics, was a 20-inch, two-row design that wasn't known for its longevity. But even newer Mustang aluminum radiator models can be problematic and tend to have shorter lifespans than those made of copper or a copper/brass combination. Aluminum can react with water and a variety of other chemicals and elements and even some coolants. And it's harder to repair. Cooling system problems are more likely to be related to other parts such as thermostats, hoses, fans and water pumps. But radiators can leak or become less efficient because of internal buildup. Leaking usually reveals itself by steam or bubbles escaping from a certain spot.

The Cost of Replacing A Mustang Radiator

A dealer will typically charge between $356 and $661 to do the job. Shops are less expensive, at $248 to $478. These figures don't include any taxes or fees. Call around to get local estimates for your particular model.

I have a '91 Mustang, and am looking at getting an aluminum radiator. From all the research I have done the Mustangs radiators came stock with a 1 1/4" inlet, and a 1 1/2" outlet, but all the ones I have been looking at have 1 1/2" inlets, and 1 3/4 outlet. Is there a way to use this radiator with both inlets/outlets being a 1/4" bigger on both sides?

See the information above regarding the characteristics of aluminum replacement radiators for your Mustang. As far as the larger inlet and outlet sizes are concerned, there won't be a problem. Both hoses will stretch that much without any difficulty.

Best Source For Mustang Parts

You can save yourself time, headaches and money by avoiding the local parts stores, the dealers and any other brick-and-mortar source. Any seller with a building has massive overhead costs, and they're built into the price of your purchase. It makes sense to buy online from a trusted source such as, where you'll find what you need and pay less for it.

Best price around for this rad. Cheaper than a re-core if originality is not important. Yea, its made in China, but if it lasts a month it should go a few years. I'm not expecting OEM service life at this price. Super quick shipment too.
