Research on Radiator for Ford Bronco

Overheating is a serious problem for your Ford Bronco's engine, and it's likely to happen if you have a bad radiator. If you have a late or Early Bronco a radiator swap to replace a damaged part is necessary if there is a leak in the system. You may have slightly more difficulty finding the right radiator if you have an older vehicle, but you should no use that as an excuse. You should still replace a damaged radiator because unless you do, you could end up with serious damage to your engine.

What is the Radiator?

The radiator is a critical part of the cooling system. It uses outside air to reduce the temperature of the coolant that passes through the radiator itself. The principle is similar to the cooling effect you feel when you stand in front of a fan during the summer. The fan blows cooler air over your body, which evaporates sweat, making you feel cooler. Inside the radiator, the hot coolant loses its heat when the radiator fan forces outside air over the coolant. Without a radiator, your engine would overheat, and you could completely ruin the engine by blowing a head gasket, which is often the result of excessive engine heat. This is a pricy repair that leads many to simply buy a new car instead of repairing. To avoid reaching that point, you need to replace a faulty radiator before your engine gets too hot.

Signs of Radiator Failure

Failure of the radiator typically is caused by leaking because the leak will remove coolant from the system. This can cause your engine to overheat or coolant to boil out of the system because it cannot release heat. If your engine temperature warning signal comes on or your temperature gauge reaches the red area, you need to pull your Bronco over and not drive until the engine has cooled again. You may need to limp home, stopping frequently to allow your engine to cool down. Once you get your Bronco home, don't drive it again until you can replace the radiator.

Why Radiators Fail

There are several problems that could cause a radiator to develop a leak. Many people think of a front-end collision as damaging to the radiator. This is only one spectacular cause of physical harm to the radiator. Sometimes, the radiator can develop a leak from road debris hitting it. With older Broncos, the early Bronco aluminum radiators may be prone to wear over the years from dealing with temperature extremes. If you use tap water to mix with your coolant, you could also damage the radiator from the inside. Especially in hard water areas, the tap water could leave calcium deposits inside the radiator, which can lead to leaks or a failure of the coolant to properly pass through the radiator. If you regularly flush your radiator, it may prevent this.

Cost for a New Radiator

A new radiator is something a mechanic can easily replace, but when changing out the radiator, the entire cooling system should be checked for any other sources of leaks. Though many mechanics recommend replacing the thermostat and radiator cap, these are not included in the price quote. For a mechanic to just replace a 1996 Ford Bronco radiator, it can cost from $601 to $867. Save money and get hard-to-find early Bronco parts by shopping online at PartsGeek.com.

Reviewer: R Merriing

The radiator fit the old slot but because it was thicker than the old radiator, the shroud holes didn't align. Just a couple minutes of drilling two holes and I was in business.

1986 Ford Bronco Radiator

Reviewer: The majority problem for all

I received my radiator almost two days later than it was stated to arrive, however I realize this can be attributed to the carrier. As far as the product the top was bent I had to straighten with pliers, fins were bent as well, also WRONG TRANSMISSION CONNECTORS. Seems like the majority of people ordering radiators have this issue. All in all good product went in with no problem other than stated above. I would and will order more parts from Parts Geek. Thank you,

1990 Ford Bronco Radiator
