Located next to the steering box on the left front side of the vehicle, the Pitman arm controls your steering linkage's lateral movement. Your Chevy Avalanche 1500's steering wheel is connected to the steering shaft. When you turn your steering wheel, a gear at the bottom of the steering shaft activates a gear that instigates the movement of the Pitman arm. If your Pitman arm isn't operating properly, steering your Chevy Avalanche 1500 will be difficult, and your steering wheel will rattle loudly every time you try to turn it.
