Research on Oil Cooler for Ford F250 Super Duty

Cool engine oil is important for keeping it from overheating. As your pickup truck works a sweat, the engine builds heat. An oil cooler is a type of radiator that also works as a heat exchanger. The oil that passes through it cools down and goes back to the hot engine, which helps to keep it at a safe temperature. A bad oil cooler will cause the engine to overheat. It must be replaced before major damage occurs that can literally be a fortune to fix.

What an Oil Cooler Does

Whether you need a replacement or a 6.0 oil cooler upgrade, it will remove the excess heat that builds up in the oil. An adapter feeds the oil into the cooler. It is placed between the engine block and oil filter. From the adapter it flows into the cooler's tubes, which are surrounded by coolant. Heat from oil goes from the oil to the outside coolant, which is cooled as it moves on through the radiator. Oil coolers usually last as long as the truck, but that doesn't mean it can't wear out, break, or get damaged.

Advantages of an Oil Cooler

An oil cooler maximizes the potential use of oil, which can cool items at a much higher temperature than water. It can be in direct contact with electrical parts and can coexist as a lubricant. Oil also helps prevent corrosion, in contrast to water. Although not desired, oil entering the combustion chamber is not particularly dangerous for the engine.

Signs the Oil Cooler Is Malfunctioning

You might need a Ford 6.0 oil cooler kit if the cooler is leaking. The source of a leak is often the adapter, since its gasket or rubber O-ring can wear out more easily. A failed adapter can drain all the oil from the engine. If you see oil pooling under the engine, have the problem checked by a mechanic to see what the problem is. A coolant leak is a sign of an oil cooler failure. Other signs of failure include oil in the cooling system or coolant in the oil pan. This can increase the oil pan levels high enough to damage the engine as excess fluid can interact with the crankshaft.

Cost of Replacing an Oil Cooler

A Ford 6.0 oil cooler replacement can vary in price. Parts are often priced by the retailers selling them, plus you have to account for labor, additional repairs, and taxes and fees. An oil cooler can be hundreds of dollars. If you need a Ford 6.0 external oil cooler, for example, the thoughts running through your mind probably revolve around how you can save. Installation prices are determined by shops, but you can find parts for less at PartsGeek.com, where our overhead is low enough to drop auto parts prices to some of the lowest you'll see. Don't let the oil cooler put your truck out of commission. Save cash and get back on the road. Our online catalog is an alternative that will extend the life and value of your pickup truck.

2001 Ford F250 Super Duty Oil Cooler

product was shipped promptly and amply packaged. The o-rings may be different than oem but not sure. Thanks for a good price and proper product parts geek. Otherwise not related to seller but perhaps helpful is; I had difficulty putting the oiler into the end housings and needed to press the two housings onto the oiler with a bar clamp. This is not showed in any of the repair videos I watched for this repair. I was expecting a two hour repair wound up spending better part of a day as the forward flange was difficult to remove due to bolt locations. I was able to do so without removing other parts. The most important thing to note would be to attempt to mark the old cooler against the flanges so you are installed in the proper positions for re-installation to the truck. It is difficult to turn the flanges but possible. I'm handy, but not a mechanic so it is a repair you can do and save $400-600.
