Research on Hood Strut for Ford Explorer

It has been a quarter-century since the Explorer arguably launched the whole SUV craze, but the 2016 rides on the same platform as it has since 2011. Ask Ford people what's new, and you find out the 2016's wheelbase measures 0.2-inch longer due to a minor suspension tweak, while the new nose adds another inch or so of overall length. The suspension layout, struts up front and a multilink rear, hasn't changed, although it has been freshly tuned for the new model year. Redesigned front and rear styling and several welcome equipment upgrades help the Explorer fend off newer competitors while broadening its appeal, but all that makes it a better SUV, not a new one.

Hood struts are the small cylinders that support the hood when it is opened. When the hood is opened, the strut is extended and the pressure inside the cylinder supports the weight of the hood. A strut is strong enough to support the weight of the hood without retracting under the weight. When a strut begins to fail, it can lead to problems with keeping the hood supported.

What are the symptoms of failing Hood struts?

The hood will slowly begin to close on its own when opened. Lift supports operate by using pressurized gas sealed inside of a metal cylinder to hold the weight of the hood. Over time, the seals can wear out and begin to leak. Once enough pressure has leaked from cylinder it will no longer be able to properly hold the weight of the hood, which will cause it to slowly lower until it eventually closes.

Another symptom of faulty hood struts is a hood that suddenly closes on its own. The strut may have worn seals that may appear to be able to support the hood, only to suddenly give out, causing the hood to slam shut. This will make working under the hood unsafe, as the hood can fall at any moment while someone is working underneath the hood.

Another, more obvious, symptom of faulty hood struts is a hood that does not stay up at all. If all the pressure leaks from the lift support it will not be able to support the weight of the hood, which will close as soon as it is opened. This will make it impossible to work underneath the hood of the vehicle without some sort of prop to support the hood.

Most hood struts will last several years, and should not require replacement until after you put a lot of mileage on your Ford Explorer. If you suspect that your vehicle may be having an issue with the hood strut, it will probably be cheaper to just replace it rather than to pay a technician to make the determination as to whether the replacement is necessary.

Very Satisfied
Reviewer: Good value. Perfect fit.

I needed two of these to get the hood to stay up (common failure on this model of vehicle) and they were easily replaced and do the job they are intended to do. I will need two more soon for another vehicle, so I will order this part again. Reasonable value compared to OEM parts.

Reviewer: shaynjay

This was not the right strut. It was a few inches too short....And when I went back on the website to try to find my mistake, this particular part at the particular price I paid wasn't there anymore. I reordered what I believe to be the right part thereafter and got the correct one. Overall very happy and will use them again.
