What Is a Head Gasket?

Most cars, trucks and SUV's use internal combustion engines. These engines can be divided into two parts:

  1. The engine block which contains pistons and cylinders
  2. The cylinder head which houses rocker arms and valves.

The head gasket is where the engine block and cylinder head meet. Its job is to ensure the engine block and cylinder head remain separated from each other. If the engine fails, one part can be disconnected from the other for maintenance or replacement.

How Do I Know If the Head Gasket Is Blown?

White smoke coming from the tail pipe is what most people think of when a head gasket has blown. However, there are more accurate indicators.

  • Coolant loss, with no visible leak. Check the engine oil for discoloration. If it resembles chocolate milk, it's probably head gasket failure.
  • Bubbles in the radiator. If the seals on the head gasket have failed, exhaust gases may wind up in the cooling system. The gasses combine with the fluid in the radiator, resulting in bubbles.
  • Leakage of engine oil. If enough pressure builds, the seals to the crank case may blow, which results in oil leaking from the oil cap or engine seals. In extreme cases, the radiator tank will crack, or the radiator hose will blow.

Is It Expensive to Replace the Head Gasket?

Older vehicles are less expensive as they do not have the electronic systems that newer models have. It is also less expensive to replace a head gasket on a 4-cylinder engine than a 6-cylinder. Prices range from $200 to $600, depending on vehicle make and model.
