Research on Fuel Tank for Ford Mustang

One of the most coveted classic collector's vehicles these days is the 1960s vintage Ford Mustang. First introduced in 1964, within a year it had become Ford Motors' most successful offering since the debut of the Model A, thirty-six years earlier. It was the first "pony car" - sporty coupes that featured long hoods (to accommodate the large, powerful engine) and short rear decks (unfortunately, it was short on trunk space - but few people cared). Arguably, the Mustang inspired similar models from other car makers, including the Chevy Camaro, the Dodge Charger and the Plymouth Barracuda. Amazingly, it is possible to purchase a fully-restored 1965 Ford Mustang for around $24,000 today - which, accounting for inflation, isn't that much more than your grandfather would have paid for it new (the original sticker price was about $2400). Now, if you are restoring one that has been neglected over the years, you'll want to think about a Mustang gas tank. Size and dimensions were pretty much the same throughout the 1960s and into the 70s, and there are a lot of places that sell them.

Stock or Not?

If you are planning to show your vintage 1966 Mustang, gas tank size, capacity and dimensions aren't that much of an issue. Show judges don't generally evaluate vehicles based on what's underneath. The original Mustang gas tank size was 22 gallons, holding enough fuel to go about 360-400 miles. With a conversion kit, these will fit pretty much any model built between 1965 and 1970; Mustang gas tank dimensions were virtually identical.

When You Might Need a New Gas Tank

One thing to remember is that the classic Mustang was a low-slung vehicle, not particularly suited to off-road travel. While it is rare, sometimes, you may "belly out" or run over a hard object, which can damage the 1965 Ford Mustang gas tank. Punch a leak in that thing and you won't be going very far. Also, if you live in a state that salts the roads in the winter, you should be aware than road salt can do a number on the undercarriage - including the gas tank, so it's a good idea to get under the car and inspect it once in awhile if you do any winter driving. (Of course, if you have a classic Mustang, chances are you keep it under a cover inside the garage when the weather is nasty.)

The price on a 1965 - 1970 Mustang gas tank can vary a lot. On the low end, you can get one for as little as under $100. Some go up to into the $180 range, but they aren't terribly expensive. What is interesting is that the prices on a newer Mustang gas tank - size notwithstanding - can be high indeed. Sometimes, a gas tank for a newer Mustang (2005 and later) can be over $600. Ordered this as a replacement in my classic mustang. Part fit well. Was about $20 cheaper than NPD and shipping was included. I did have to grind, with my dremel, a bit on the new fuel pickup and also the vent cap to get to fit. The circumference of the inlet was a bit smaller than the old tank. Was able to get everything to fit and installed. I would suggest getting new strap bolts (carriage bolts) when you get the tank to save some frustration when mounting the new tank in.
