Research on Fuel Pump for Nissan Altima

A fuel pump is one of the basic components of a car though not compulsory for all vehicles. Carbureted engines utilize low-pressure mechanical pumps that are situated outside the fuel tank while fuel injected engines use electric fuel pumps mounted inside the fuel tank. Fuel injection engines with two fuel pumps are also a common feature. Mechanical fuel pumps have a flexible diaphragm, and the pump chamber's is volume is increased or decreased by flexing the diaphragm. Electric fuel pumps generate electrical pressure in fuel lines that drive fuel to the internal combustion engine. An ignition switch activates the pump relay that manages the high current necessary to increase fuel pressure.

How the Nissan Altima Fuel Pump Operates

When the ignition key is turned on, the powertrain control module (PCM) energizes a relay that supplies voltage to the fuel pump. The Nissan Altima fuel pump relay location is in the fuel pump. The motor inside the pump spins and runs to build pressure in the fuel system. A timer in the PCM determines how long the pump runs until the engine starts. Fuel is drawn into the pump through an inlet tube and the Nissan Altima fuel filter that keeps debris out of the pump. The fuel then exits the pump and is pushed towards the engine through the fuel line and filter. It then flows to the fuel supply rail and is routed to the individual injectors. A fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail maintains fuel pressure and routes excess fuel back to the tank. The fuel pump runs continuously once the engine starts and continues to run as long as the engine is running and the ignition is on.

Some Of The Problems You Could Be Facing With Your Nissan Altima Fuel Pump

The engine may not start; this is the most severe problem which means that the pump has malfunctioned to the point where the vehicle no longer starts indicating that there is no fuel reaching the engine when ignited. You may find that your vehicle surges or accelerates with no drive input, as a result of age and normal wear and tear your fuel pump will have irregular resistance within its motor. Your vehicle may encounter sudden loss of power when under stress; it can occur when climbing a hill or hauling a load and the vehicle loses power and cannot accelerate and begins to sputter. Your fuel pump may be the reason. Your engine sputters at high speed; your vehicle will travel normally for about 10 miles then start to sputter and jerk, some people may diagnose this as an almost empty fuel tank or dirty gas, but this results as the fuel pump strives to supply a regular flow of fuel at the appropriate pressure.

Nissan Altima Fuel Pump Cost of Replacement

Fuel pump replacement is one of the more expensive vehicle repairs. The total cost of replacing your fuel pump will range from $429 to $630 with labor costs ranging between $82 and $117 and parts between $347 to$513. Nissan has issued a recall for the premature failure of 2.5 L 4 cylinder 3.5 liters V6 for 9 model years including 1993,2002,2003 and 2005 Nissan Altima fuel pump.
