Research on Fuel Pump for Jeep Grand Cherokee

The fuel pump is a vital component of any car or truck. Its responsibility is to pump fuel from a vehicle's tank to its engine. Because of this, if a fuel pump malfunctions, it will in most cases lead to a sudden and unexpected engine failure. Car owners should know the common symptoms of a malfunctioning fuel pump so that preventative measure can be taken before the problem exacerbates.

Common Symptoms of a Malfunctioning Fuel Pump

Some of the common Jeep fuel pump symptoms include:

Sputtering Engine at High Speed

The most common early sign of an issue crops up when you drive a vehicle at consistently high speed. When you are traveling down the road, your vehicle will run smoothly without any problems for about 10 miles and then it will start sputtering or jerking before it returns to normal. At times, most people will confuse a sputtering vehicle as a car with a fuel-related problem like an almost-empty tank, "dirty" gas, etc. While this could be the case, a fatigued or damaged fuel pump can also cause this same very symptom as it struggles to supply the car's engine with a constant stream of fuel at the proper pressure. The engine sputters due to loss of pressure.

Power Loss while Accelerating

Sometimes, a vehicle will jerk when it is accelerating from a stop. It may throw out a stalling sound in the beginning and then accelerate without any problems. This happens due to one reason. Once your foot is off the brake and hits the gas pedal, the flow of diesel or gas is increased by a working pump to fuel acceleration. A malfunction causes your car to be starved of that increased flow, which then means that it does not have the power it requires to respond to commands. Once you restore pressure, the engine can run smoothly and your car takes off.

Sudden power loss when the vehicle is under stress, engine not starting and surging are some of the other symptoms of a malfunctioning fuel pump. When you are able to understand these symptoms and identify them correctly at the earliest, you can avoid getting to the point where your car is unable to start, costing you a large sum of money on repairs. Whether it is a 1996 Jeep Cherokee fuel pump replacement or 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee fuel pump replacement, the job is not as easy as changing oil, so it is best to take your vehicle to a professional to get the job done.

Recall of Grand Cherokees for Fuel Pump Issues

In 2015, FCA US, formerly known as Chrysler, recalled almost half a million Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos across the globe to install a new relay circuit in order to fix a fuel pump. According to the company, the fuel pumps may have been susceptible to deformation that prevented a vehicle from starting or led to an engine stall. Of the two problems, the more common one was the failure to start. No injuries or accidents were reported to be caused by the defect and the company said that no other functions were affected due to the fuel pump relay.

Cost of Fuel Pump Replacement for Jeep Grand Cherokee

The average cost for a fuel pump replacement for a Jeep Grand Cherokee is between $468 and $588. The costs of labor are estimated between $184 and $234. The prices of parts are between $284 and $354. You can get a personalized estimate based on your location and specific car. Estimates do not include fees and taxes.

After 19 years my fuel pump failed. I replaced it with an Air**x unit. The fuel gage immediately read wrong and then stopped working completely. The pump was loud and probably would have failed soon but I replaced the whole thing with the Delphi unit from Parts Geek. It fit perfectly, came with detailed installation instructions and is nice and quiet. The gas gage works perfectly now too. Its a much better unit.
