Research on Fuel Pump for Dodge Ram 2500

Your Dodge Ram 2500 fuel pump is an integral part of your truck. It is responsible for transporting or pumping the fuel from the gas tank to your truck's engine. One that malfunctions can leave you stuck on the side of the road. Your engine may crank but will not start. You may also have a lack of power in your truck. Excessive noise and hesitation when accelerating are all symptoms of a failing fuel pump. These are all basic to a Dodge Ram 2500 fuel pump problem. The first step is to check your fuel filter. Having a clogged fuel filter will result in the same symptoms as a failed fuel pump. It is important to start here before you decide to do a full Dodge Ram 1500 fuel pump replacement.

Lift the Bed or Drop the Tank?

I got to change the fuel pump, drop the tank or lift the bed, anyone knows which is easier? To change, for example, a 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 fuel pump, it is really your personal preference to lift your truck bed or just drop the fuel tank. The new fuel pump will be placed in the top of the fuel tank right below the truck bed bottom. It can be accessed by removing two straps and dropping the fuel tank or by removing approximately 6 bolts in the bed of the truck and lifting the bed. If you decide to lift the bed, you will have an easier time with some big jack stands or a lift. If you choose to work with the gas tank then it is wise to run the gas out of it. With any amount of gas in the tank please take extra precaution. Disconnect the battery and remove anything from your work area that could cause the gasoline to ignite.

Test to See if it Works

The fuel pumps purpose is to inject gasoline into your engine under high pressure to cause the proper atomization of the gas. A couple of quick tests may give you an indication if you need a new one. First turn your key but don't actually start your truck. You should hear a whining noise coming from the tank for about three seconds, that is your fuel pump. Since Dodge fuel pumps either work or they don't it isn't wise to bang on your fuel tank to "wake up" the fuel pump as you can on some other vehicles. If your reliable 98 won't start it is safe to assume that you need a new 1998 dodge ram 2500 fuel pump to get it back on the road. In the future, it is smart to keep your fuel tank full of gas as often as possible. This aids in keeping your new fuel pump cool.

Cost to Change Your Fuel Pump

An average repair shop will pull between $330-$530 out of your pocket to change a Dodge Ram fuel pump. This is a relatively easy job you can do yourself, especially if you have a friend to help. There are some great short videos that show the process online. If you go this route, then you simply need the parts. Your best bet is to shop an online supplier like You are very likely to get the best price with us because we only sell online and have very little overhead. This gives you some incredible savings.

I got this part, a fuel pump, in record time. Threw it into my truck tool box, having intermediate trouble with tuck stalling. Yesterday the truck stalled on the highway, would not restart. Installed the new part, no more problems. Thank you Parts Geek. The part was exactly right and much cheaper than local parts store.

Reviewer: Better then original!

A few years back the dealer relocated the supply pump on my 02 Dodge Cummins in the fuel tank, I never saw better then 7psi from that pump, ran for a long time at 4psi, I was never happy with that pump/output, then it started having trouble keeping that.

I ordered the Airtex Fuel Pump from parts geek, the price was great at $184 and bought the extended 3yr warrantee for 28 bucks more.

They promised “better then new” on the site, I was not holding my breath on that one, I’ve read the stories on line about aftermarket standard pump replacements, but couldn’t afford the high performance retro kits

A few days later I was holding the new pump assembly, it appeared to have a larger pump motor [good] and a better sock filter mounted outside the pump cooling cup, [good] the pump was delivered before promised [great] was shipped free, and after installed, maintains 12+psi!

[impressive for a tank pump with that tiny power line]=I’m happy with the purchase
