Research on Engine Mount for Dodge Neon

The Dodge Neon was always considered a second-class vehicle. It had several mechanical problems in its first years, but was faster, roomier, and sportier than the competition. The Dodge Neon initially offered a twin-cam engine in its sport coupe that made the Neon fly like a bat out of Hell with just a tap on the gas pedal. The cab-forward design, which lengthened and widened the wheelbase by bringing the wheels farther out to the edges of the car, added stability and extra interior room.

The early popularity of the Neon was due to its being such fun to drive, but it also suffered from a reputation for unreliability, which kept some potential buyers at a distance. The Neon's strongest selling points were its spacious interior and powerful engine. Handling was smooth, easy, and agile, and it blasted like a tank through inclement weather. Attempts were made to correct problems that led to head gasket failures and excessive wind noise, bur the Neon never quite got those things right. But any minor complaints a serious driver might have about this little car were tossed out the window the first time they shifted the Neon from second to third gears.

What does an engine mount do for a car?

Available in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit a wide variety of needs, they all serve the same purpose of mounting the engine and dampening engine vibration. Metal is used to withstand the force and torque generated by the engine, and rubber is used to absorb and dampen the vibrations. As engines generate a considerable amount of vibration in their regular operation, a problem with the motor mounts can usually be quite noticeable.

What are the symptoms of a failing engine mount?

Worn, damaged, or broken motor mounts can cause clunking, banging, and other impact sounds as a result of the engines weight shifting excessively to the point of contact. Another symptom is excessive engine vibration. If the rubber or vibration dampening parts of the motor mount wear out or break, the mounts ability to absorb engine vibrations will be reduced. Undamped engine vibrations will cause the vehicle to vibrate, making the cabin uncomfortable for passengers. Finally, if the engine mounts are in good condition, they should be able to secure the engine firmly in the engine bay. If they are worn or broken, the engine could move forward, backwards, or side to side in the engine bay. The movement may be especially pronounced when accelerating, and may also be accompanied by an impact noise.

Due to the amount of vibration that engines generate as part of their regular operation, motor mounts are an important component on any vehicle. When they fail, this will not only make the cabin uncomfortable for the passengers, it can also place an additional strain that can damage other components.
