Dodge Dakota Replacement Electronic Control Unit Information

Your Dodge Dakota is a complex machine that relies on thousands of parts and hundreds of systems working together to get you from one place to another. Like other modern vehicles, it uses multiple electronic control units, also known as the vehicle computers, to keep everything functioning properly. The electronic control units (ECUs) in your Dakota perform a number of important tasks while you drive. They use the thermostat and temperature-sensing equipment to control the coolant system, they adjust the suspension, control airbags, limit speed and adjust the critical timing that keeps everything perfectly synchronized. Dodge Dakotas and other recent vehicles may include almost 100 units that each have their own internal software and jobs. It's important to replace each ECU with a properly sourced, manufacturer-programed unit that can perform the same job correctly, which is why Parts Geek is the premier source of ECUs for most drivers.

Research on Electronic Control Unit for Dodge Dakota

Auto manufacturers have relied more and more on electronic and computerized components in modern vehicles. These on-board computers give us increased fuel economy, more reliable operation, and a higher level of safety. They also help us control the climate, comfort, and entertainment components found in cars today.

But, these improvements come with their fair share of corresponding drawbacks. When the electronics and computerized systems of your Dodge Dakota stop working, they can greatly impact the performance and reliability of your truck. And, at worst, they can be the source of a complete failure of your vehicle to start. And that tends to happen at just the wrong time, doesn't it?

What is the ECU in a car? And, what is the ECM?

The electronic control unit (ECU) is the main computer brain that manages the electronic control components of modern engines. It provides oversight control for a variety of systems that regulate the air-to-fuel ratio, the ignition and engine timing, and the idle speed of the vehicle, among other things. Sometimes, the term "electronic control module" is also used. Typically, the ECU and ECM are interchangeable terms, often used based on the manufacturer's preferred terminology. The best way to assure you are using the correct term is to double-check the year, make, and model of your vehicle and search for replacement parts or consult the owner's manual.

How do I know if my ECU is bad?

Think you're having Dodge Dakota control module problems? There are a few possibly symptoms to consider when evaluating the issues with your Dakota. Not starting is the most prominent symptom, though not starting can be caused by various other issues. If the car starts but idles too slow and stalls, or it races way too fast, that could be a very good indication that the Dodge Dakota electronic throttle control is faulty. The ECU also controls the dashboard error lights, so any odd or inconsistent warnings could be a sing that the control unit is malfunctioning. Of course, the dreaded "Check Engine" light is another way your ECU may warn you of impending doom.

Where do I buy an ECU?

Replacing the main computer unit of your car many sound like a really complex chore, but it can be a bit easier than it sounds. If you have determined that your 2001 Dodge Dakota control module is faulty, and if you have searched the internet and found a Dodge Dakota ECU pdf file to help you locate the part (auto makers tend to place the ECU in various, random places) you can search an online auto parts retailer like You can find a 2005 Dodge Dakota control unit for between $200 and $250 on, and they will help you make sure you have the correct ECU for your make and model, and they will ship it to your door in no time.

Worked perfect, however it does have to be programmed, would be nice if the option was given to me to have it programmed before it was shipped.

Unit came with identical shape and mounting. I was concerned about this because the website depiction was not exact. Lot's of warnings about entering certain codes but it was not necessary. Unit plugged in and vehicle started right up. It previously had an ignition coil pulse issue which the unit evidently corrected. I am very satisfied with this reconditioned unit and they are standing by it for a year so how can you go wrong?

This product shipped on time and was the correct item. However, I did not understand until the order was placed that it did not come programmed and that had to be done at a dealership or with a mechanic.
