Research on Control Arm for Toyota Camry

The Toyota Camry is America's third best-selling car. This front- wheel drive, five-passenger, four-door sedan received a thorough freshening for 2015, which included body stiffening and improved sound insulation. The 2015 Toyota Camry is refined, modern, and bold in appearance. New technology has added features such as a pre-collision system, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic high beam headlights. According to Toyota, the steering has been improved, its suspension tuning is new, and the brakes have been enhanced. The exterior boasts restyled head and tail lights as well as a larger front grill, while the interior, aside from some new seat material, remains much the same.

What are control arms?

Control arms control the motion of the wheels to maintain their alignment with the car's body. They connect the car's suspension to the vehicle frame through brushings, while they attach to the suspension through the ball joint. This enables the vehicle to turn its wheel and pivot, connecting the tire to the car's suspension. The control arm assembly is triangular in shape, with two brushings at each end and at the ball joint. Cars typically have two to four control arms, depending on whether the vehicle's suspension system has struts or shocks. Some vehicles have upper and lower control arms, although the design of the strut assembly makes it possible for most cars today to require only the lower ones.

What other parts may need replacement if the control arm is bad?

If a ball joint is built into the control arm as one piece and cannot be replaced separately, the whole control arm will need to be replaced if a ball joint shows some wear.

Toyota Camry Recall

On December 12, 2014, Toyota Motor Corporation recalled a certain model year 2014 Toyota Camry, Camry HV, Avalon, and Avalon HV vehicles equipped with 16-inch and 17-inch rims. In approximately 5650 affected vehicles, the left-side front suspension lower arm may have been incorrectly manufactured. As a result, the left side lower arm may not have enough clamping surface area for one of the bolts that secures the lower arm to the lower ball joint. Because of the insufficient clamping force, the lower arm may separate from the ball joint, increasing the risk of a crash. Toyota notified owners, and dealers agreed to replace the left side lower arm at no cost.

What is the control arm assembly replacement cost?

The cost to replace a control arm can be expensive. Oftentimes, the brushings and ball joints are replaced as part of the entire control arm assembly unit -- although it depends on the level of damage and wear. The control arm alone costs about $200, and labor usually takes a couple of hours.

The price of replacing a control arm can vary greatly depending on what type of car it is. Usually you have to replace the control arm and brushing together. The national average for the cost on the Toyota Camry is $142-$163 for labor, and $86-$143 for parts. Prices at PartsGeek for the part alone range from $43-$82.
