Research on Control Arm for Mercedes E500

Your suspension system needs to connect to the rest of your vehicle, but if you have a control arm issue, you lack this bridge, and you could have driving problems with your Mercedes E500. Even if you just need a new ball joint or a replacement W211 lower control arm bushing, you may find that it's easier to replace the entire control arm assembly, but before you start taking your Mercedes apart, you'll need to recognize the signs of a control arm that needs to be replaced. Doing so will save you from installing a new control arm unnecessarily.

What is a Control Arm?

The control arm acts as the link to connect the chassis, the wheel hub, and the steering knuckle. If you think this sounds like an important piece, you're right. The control arm provides vehicle stability and some of the flexibility, too. When you hit a pothole or just make a turn, the control arms allow your wheels to change position without falling off. There are three main components to each A-shaped control arm, and when one part goes bad, you'll need to install an entirely new W211 rear control arm or one on the front of your vehicle, and it's best to replace control arms in pairs for even wear on the parts.

Components of a Control Arm

The control arms are made of bushings, ball joints, and the main body of the control arm. The bushings are small rubber parts that provide cushioning between your control arm and the vehicle frame. When the bushings wear out, the control arm has more freedom to move, which can create a serious situation. The ball joints connect the control arm to the other end at the wheel hub. Because the ball joint is shaped like your shoulder, it allows full movement of the wheels, just as your shoulder lets you move your arm up and down and in circles. A ball joint that completely fails could cause the wheel to separate from the control arm, which is a dire situation if it occurs when you're driving. It's best to replace control arms as soon as you see signs of wear instead of waiting for the components to completely fail.

Signs of a Worn Control Arm

When you have a worn part on your control arm, you'll feel it when driving. Pay attention to your steering. Do you feel vibrations in the steering wheel? Or is the steering wheel not as responsive as it once was? These could indicate problems with one of your control arms or components. You may also find that you hear clunking noises, especially when going around turns or bumps, and your wheels may feel like they're shaking. If you encounter these symptoms of a bad control arm when driving, get yourself to a mechanic or get a new control arm assembly to replace the part yourself. The problem will only get worse over time.

Cost for a Mercedes Lower Control Arm Replacement

A new W211 lower control arm replacement to replace the ball joints on both sides can cost you from $571 to $917 for a mechanic to do the job, but if you purchase the control arms and install them yourself, you can save a lot of money, and for the best control arm prices with the easy of online ordering, check out

I had installed new air struts on a Saturday and while reassembling the upper ball joint I had broken the upper ball joint right off, blessing in disguise!! I tried locally to purchase a new upper control arm assembly with no results. Best I could do would be to call on Monday when full time parts staff would be on duty. I figured this would mean the soonest I would get it would be possibly Wednesday or even Thursday. I did a quick search on line and a Parts Geek ad came up. I checked them out. Not only was the price more than half the cost of an equal item, ie, aftermarket, but I could have it on Friday. Not the end of the world being I only have the weekends to repair my daily driver and I do have an alternate means of transportation to get back and forth to work. With knowing the part was in stock and delivery would fit my scheduled, I went ahead and ordered both the left and right control arms with shipping for less that the cost of a single control arm from my local store!!
