A Jeep Wrangler Clutch is an essential component within your transmission enabling the current gear to be disengaged from the car's driveshaft so that another larger or lower gear to be applied. Research on Clutch for Jeep Wrangler

The Jeep Wrangler Clutch enables the transmission to shift gears by temporarily disengaging the vehicle's transmission from its motor. It is comprised of six parts. The pressure plate is a piece of steel that connects the clutch disc to the flywheel. When connected, the clutch disc spins with the flywheel. By moving the clutch in and out, the clutch disc is alternately engaged and disengaged from the flywheel, which makes it possible to shift gears. By connecting the clutch and crankshaft to the engine, the flywheel gives the starter the impetus to engage, and then maintain the speed of, the engine. The last three parts are the release bearing, which engages and disengages the pressure plate, the release form, which holds that bearing in place as the clutch is manipulated, and the pilot bushing, which supports the transmission input shaft tip.

What Could Go Wrong?

A common complaint from owners of the Jeep Wranglers is that the clutches tend to wear out very quickly. When the friction material wears out, the clutch will begin to slip. Things get worse if your clutch fails to release properly. The input shaft will continue to turn, which could prevent your Jeep from going into gear. Jeep Wrangler clutch problems can be determined by engaging your parking brake, then starting your engine and shifting into neutral. If you hear a growling noise, you may have a transmission problem. If not, push the clutch pedal in, listening for noise. If you don't hear anything, push the clutch pedal all the way to the floor. If you hear a squealing noise, the problem might be traced to a bad release bearing or pilot bushing.

How Much will it Cost?

The average Jeep Wrangler clutch replacement cost is between $865 and $1202. Labor costs are estimated at between $440 and $555, while parts are priced between $425 and $647. Estimate does not include taxes and fees. An unforeseen expense could be the resurfacing or replacement of the flywheel, which is sometimes recommended when the clutch is replaced. You should also be aware of any engine oil or transmission fluid leaks you might have, as they can damage a clutch. If you have such leaks, you might consider replacing the rear main seal and/or the transmission input shaft seal in order to prevent the need for future repairs.

Jeep Wrangler Recall

Safety Recall R13 notified owners of the 2006 (TJ) Jeep Wrangler, (KJ) Jeep Liberty and (ZB) Dodge Viper that the clutch interlock switch on about 43,000 of those vehicles may contain a return spring that fatigues. A fatigued clutch interlock switch return spring could allow the driver to engage the engine starter motor without the clutch pedal being depressed. Engaging the engine starter motor with the transmission in gear and the clutch engaged, could result in unintended vehicle movement and cause an unexpected crash. This Jeep Wrangler Recall states that the clutch interlock switch must be replaced on all involved vehicles.

Although the Jeep Wrangler clutch replacement cost has been estimated at $435-$647 for parts alone, PartsGeek has Jeep Wrangler Clutch Kits listed in their catalog as running between $85-$171, so they are worth checking out before yielding to the more expensive offers elsewhere.
