Research on Catalytic Converter for Toyota Prius

Your treasured Prius is safe for the environment thanks to the catalytic converter. This important component of the exhaust system is efficient at converting harmful gases into inert ones. The cat operates in a rough environment and is prone to wear on many fronts. If it goes bad, pollutants will escape into the air and the performance of your vehicle will decline. A new catalytic converter can be expensive, but more affordable replacements are no longer hard to find.

Signs of Impending Catalytic Converter Failure

In addition to exhaust issues, usually made known by a failed emissions test, there may be noticeable symptoms you are in need of 2008 Toyota Prius catalytic converter replacement. The cat is built into your car's exhaust system. If it becomes clogged or develops a leak, engine performance will suffer. You might experience less power and acceleration. Fuel efficiency declines are also telltale signs of a cat problem. Rattling sounds coming from damaged or broken parts inside the metal shell may be heard, especially when first starting the car. Even if you don't experience these Toyota Prius catalytic converter problems, the Check Engine light may tell you the air/fuel ratio is off or exhaust gas levels aren't where they should be.

What Is the Catalytic Converter?

The heart of your emissions control system, the cat is a metal shell with a honeycomb core, where precious metal catalysts are stored. A washcoat spreads these out over a greater surface area and oxides are also contained in the part to ensure sufficient oxygen storage. The interior of the converter is engineered to maximize the surface area on which engine exhaust particles can interact with the catalysts. Although invented earlier, the catalytic converter was developed for cars in the 1950s. Thanks to stricter emissions control regulations, the device went into mass production for widespread use in automobiles by the 1970s.

Where Is the Catalytic Converter Located in a Car?

Like most, the 2005 Prius catalytic converter is placed by the exhaust manifold. This puts it in close proximity to hot exhaust gases so the desired reactions can take place. It's also positioned to cut emissions even during the critical warm up phase. The cat is often built directly into the exhaust system, and is part of the manifold and piping that leads to the muffler.

Cost of Prius Catalytic Converter Replacement

This is a notoriously expensive repair. Firstly, replacing a 2006 Toyota Prius catalytic converter will typically run from $1,333 to $1,974, and over $2,000 for a 2014 model. Parts prices are exorbitantly high. Don't spend a dime more than you have to. has what you need for so much less, so desperately replacing a failed catalytic converter doesn't wipe out your bank account. All prices are legitimate. We have greatly reduced overhead by selling auto parts exclusively on the Internet. You can easily search for what you need and make a purchase. Getting your car back running is much more affordable than it ever has been, and your emissions and exhaust system will be completely restored once the job is complete.

Worked out well -- professionally installed and solved the check engine light problem.

2001 Toyota Prius Catalytic Converter

Somewhat Satisfied
Reviewer: Shipped in 3 pieces, not one, & clamp & gasket missing.

From the photo, the listing shows only one piece, just like the OEM part, but it is actually broken down into 3 pieces for shipping. This makes it difficult to install for one person, with only two hands. The OEM pipe has a flange on each end that requires a doughnut gasket. Only one of these gaskets was included and it was the wrong size, so I had to reuse the old ones. These gaskets are not cheap to buy ($13 each?), and were not in stock anywhere. I couldn't buy and wait for shipping, so I reused the old ones. Also, only one pipe clamp was included, but I needed two, since this is shipped in 3 pieces, which required another trip to the parts store to pick up this clamp. Lucky they had one in stock, 1.75" size is odd. Possibly the missing gasket and clamp fell out of the box, since the staples holding the box together were missing and the box was only held together with two pieces of tape, for these heavy, metal items. Great price though, and it is working.

Reviewer: Exact replacement

I was surprised when my 2004 Prius failed an emission test. Seems the catalytic converter had gone bad. After searching around, I found a replacement catalytic and 'B' pipe at Parts Geek. The price was reasonable, shipping was prompt and the replacement parts (3 pieces to replace the single welded factory pipe) were an exact fit. I wish the downstream gasket where the 'B' pipe connects to the muffler had been included. I ended up going to a Toyota dealer for that part to complete the install. But, I am very satisfied with this replacement.

2002 Toyota Prius Catalytic Converter

Reviewer: Worked Well

I had to replace my catalytic converter to pass emissions inspection MD, and this replacement did it. I had to pay a few bucks extra (less than 50) to get the mounting bracket and gaskets, which did not come with the part, although it is not mentioned on the site. Aside from that, the price is reasonable and the part works as advertised, so overall quite happy.
