Research on Brakes for Ford F150

The Ford F150 has drawn more complaints, controversies, and investigations in regard to its braking system than just about every other vehicle on the US market.

In May 2016, Ford issued a Ford F150 recall for approximately 271,000 2013-2014 Ford F-150 vehicles in North America to replace their brake master cylinders. In some vehicles, it is possible the brakes were compromised by brake fluid leaking from the brake master cylinder into the brake booster, increasing the risk of a crash. The brake fluid leak affects brakes to the front wheels only and does not affect rear wheel braking. Ford is aware of allegations of nine accidents with no injuries, and one alleged injury involving interaction with the vehicle's brakes but not associated with an accident. 270,873 vehicles are affected, including 225,012 in the United States, 43,682 in Canada and 402 in Mexico. Dealers will replace the brake master cylinder at no cost to the customer, and will replace the brake booster if they find leaks from the brake master cylinder.

FBI Investigation

The U.S. government is investigating complaints that the brakes can fail on Ford's F-150 pickup truck. The investigation covers about 420,000 pickups with 3.5-liter, six-cylinder engines from the 2013 and 2014 model years. The agency said it has 33 complaints, including some reports that the pedals can suddenly go to the floor with a complete loss of braking. The investigation isn't the first into brake problems with Ford's flagship F-150. A previous investigation looked into complaints that the power brake assist can fail on about 250,000 pickups from the 2011 and 2012 model years that also have 3.5-liter engines.

How do you know if your brake pads need replacing?

Worn brake pads can result in a loud squeaking or grinding noise while driving, especially at low speeds. Replacing your brake pads early may prevent the brake rotors from being damaged beyond repair. Brake rotors should be measured at every brake pad replacement. If found to be at or below the minimum thickness specification, they will need to be replaced. While it's a safe practice to use rotors worn or machined to the manufacture's minimum specification, brake pedal pulsation is more likely to occur with thinner rotors. If your vehicle is prone to brake pedal pulsation issues, you may be better off replacing worn rotors than re-machining them. How thick is the brake pad?

Most brake pads are equipped with sensors built in to the brake pad material. When a brake pad that's 12 mm thick new wears to approximately 3 mm, the metal sensor usually becomes exposed and makes contact with the disc.

How much does it cost to get your brakes done?

For the installation of a front brake pad set that includes 2 front brake rotors, you can expect to pay between $225 - $287 for labor, and $269 - $676 for parts.
