Research on Axle for Hyundai Elantra

The Hyundai Elantra is a South Korean compact car which has been redesigned over the years. It is a fuel efficient car which comes in either a 2.0-liter gasoline inline four engines, or a 1.6-liter turbodiesel inline four engines. The vehicle has a manual transmission system of 5 speeds with an optional automatic transmission version. One of the least known parts of this car or any other car is the axle. This is a vital component in the way your car runs. The axle assembly for the front wheels can get damaged anytime and this can affect your car extensively. The good thing is that you do not need a mechanic to do this for you, it is an easy task that anyone can do.

How to replace a damaged axle assembly part

The first step is to remove the vehicle hubcap which is done before jacking up the car. The next step is removing the cotter pin that is used to secure the axle nut. This particular pin looks like a bobby pin with folded ends to hold it in place. Pliers are useful to straighten the bent bolts, which are two in number. If you find the pin stuck, use a penetrating lubricant from a hardware store to use in the opening the axle nut. Once the pin is out, remove the axle nut which needs significant force. Each vehicle normally has its own socket size since the axle nuts do not come in a standard set. Make sure that you have the exact socket for your nuts before you even begin working on the vehicle.

Jack up the car on the side you want to work on and remove the wheel. Be careful to place the jack on the appropriate spot on the frame, and not on the weak spots. Once lifted, make sure that the vehicle is in parking mode. Place jack stands which are reinforcements for stability. Once you have removed the wheel, you will be able to remove the brake calipers and unbolt the outer tie rod which is normally bolted to the knuckle of the steering wheel, located behind the rotor. Use a lubricant to make the process easier, since the bolt might be held in place by a contact pin. If you find the rod stiff even after removing the bolt, use a hammer to help in removing it, but be careful only to hit where the rod goes through, because if you hit the threaded part, you will damage the rod. You will then need to unbolt the hub away from the strut tower. Once this is done, move the hub. Using a pry bar, pry the axle from the joint where it connects to the transmission. Insert the new axle as you removed the old one and repeat the removal process to have everything in place.
