"In science fiction, we dream." — Ray Bradbury

There are many genres of science fiction, including alien invasion, space opera, cyberpunk, dystopian fiction, steampunk, imaginary voyage, hard science fiction, space western, time travel, alternate history, and post-apocalyptic. No matter the subgenre, many science-fiction movies, science-fiction TV shows, and science-fiction books feature spectacular vessels that transport the protagonists on their epic journeys or terrorize Earthlings as they loom overhead. These sci-fi vehicles come in many different shapes and sizes, and this infographic provides a fascinating science-fiction ship-size comparison as well as insights into their top speed, creator, and engine type.

Most science-fiction fans have imagined what life would be like aboard a flying sci-fi vehicle, soaring among the stars and discovering new planets. Star Wars is one of the most immersive and celebrated science fiction media franchises: Let's take a closer look at the vehicles of Star Wars first.

What Are the Most Powerful Star Wars Ships?

>It's difficult to truly determine which Star Wars ships would prevail over the others, but there has been intense speculation and calculations from Star Wars fans. Here are some of the most formidable starships in the galaxy:

  • The Supremacy: The Supremacy is a Mega-class Star Dreadnought type and serves as Supreme Leader Snoke's personal flagship. It made its first terrifying appearance in The Last Jedi. The colossal size is petrifying, but it has a feature that makes it utterly dreadful: It houses a tracking device that allows it to pursue other ships through lightspeed, making it nearly inescapable.
  • Super Star Destroyer: "Aboard the Executor, being useful is the only way to survive," Maximillian Veers says. Imperial Star Destroyers are dreadful to behold. Now, imagine one that was more than double in size. The Executor, the personal flagship of Darth Vader, was a staggering 62,336 feet long (19,000 meters) and was considered one of the most powerful Imperial vessels ever created. It was equipped with twin heavy turbo-laser batteries, twin battleship ion cannons, and assault concussion missile launchers. It was also capable of housing more than 1,000 ships, including TIE-series starfighters and Walkers.
  • The Invisible Hand: The Invisible Hand was a Providence-class dreadnought under the control of General Grevious during the Clone Wars. Its mammoth size and armament of swift, unmanned vulture droids made it a vicious foe to encounter. Vulture droids were constructed in the cathedral factories of Xi Char, and the precise manufacturing process was considered an act of religious worship by the Separatist Alliance.
  • The Millennium Falcon: Despite its slapdash appearance and modest size compared to other sci-fi starships, the Millennium Falcon was a force to be reckoned with. Many enhancements were made to the ship's weapons, shields, and speed. The heavily modified Isu-Sim SSP05 hyperdrive made it among the fastest starships in the galaxy, capable of outrunning Imperial Star Destroyers. The sensor-proof smuggling compartments proved invaluable during the rescue of Princess Leia Organa.

What Are the Most Powerful Star Trek Ships?

>Star Trek is another sci-fi franchise that's revered by fans of all ages. Star Trek ships vary dramatically due to the many alien species that reside within the universe. Here are a couple of the most powerful fictional sci-fi ships in Star Trek lore:

  • USS Vengeance: With a name like Vengeance, this Star Trek starship was destined to be a leader among science-fiction vehicles. The Vengeance was built for combat: It was much larger, swifter, and more heavily armed than other Starfleet ships. This dreadnought-class ship had an extremely powerful phaser armament that could penetrate the defensive shields of a standard starship and breach the hull, even if the target was traveling at warp speed. This forced the ship back into normal space, defenseless.
  • USS Prometheus: Prometheus was an experimental prototype engineered for tactical assignments in deep space. It was the fastest ship in Starfleet, with a warp factor of 9.99. Prometheus' most fearsome ability was the "multi-vector assault mode": It had the ability to split into three separate parts, wreaking havoc from all angles.

What Are Some Iconic Sci-Fi Cars?

Some iconic sci-fi vehicles are a bit more down to earth, taking to the streets or hovering high above the crowds. Here are a few of the most iconic sci-fi cars in movies and television:

  • Delorean DMC-12 Time Machine: The DeLorean time machine was the most successful invention of Dr. Emmett Brown in Back to the Future. Powered by plutonium, this modified sports car was capable of time travel if it reached 88 miles per hour. The idea for the flux capacitor used to make time travel possible came to Doc after he slipped and hit his head on a sink.
  • Lexus 2054: The Lexus 2054 is a concept vehicle created by Harald Belker for the film Minority Report. Director Stephen Spielberg, a Lexus enthusiast himself, had requested a vehicle that would be suitable for the year 2054, the setting of the film and the Philip K. Dick short story it was based on. Some of the swanky features the Lexus 2054 has are the ability to drive itself, take dinner orders verbally, and choose music to suit the occupant's moods.
  • Spinners: Spinners were automobiles used by the Los Angeles Police Department in Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049. The Spinner had a highly influential design, with iconic sci-fi films such as The Fifth Element and Star Wars emulating the hover-car style.
