A solenoid is a current-carrying coil of wire that acts like a magnet when a current passes through it. Without an automatic transmission solenoid, you wouldn't be able to shift gears. It is part of a unit called the solenoid pack that functions like a sensor, signaling the engine by adding or alleviating the hydraulic pressure of the system. Each automatic transmission solenoid either energizes or de-activates the shifting gear. Solenoid malfunction is often a very easy problem to fix and can be diagnosed and repaired quickly.
