Sitting on the topside of the engine and subject to great heat and pressure, over time the valve cover gasket can deteriorate and allow oil to leak out of the engine. While the procedures involved in replacing this part are fairly simple, they do need to be performed without hurry and with care, as trying to rush though this sort of project can result in damaging the gasket or one or both of the surfaces it sits between – the valve cover itself and the engine block. If damage is done, then the time spent in labor was for naught, as the odds are that it will leak, perhaps even worse than when the task was begun. One of the common mistakes made is in the removal of the old gasket, when vigorous or impatient scraping leaves gouges in the surface that the new gasket will have to adhere to.
