Looking for a great way to boost engine function? No matter what kind of car you drive, one of the best ways to improve overall performance is to ensure that the fuel/oxygen mix reaching the engine is optimized and well controlled. An internal combustion engine relies on a combination of fuel and oxygen, the two components required to feed the explosions that keep your car running. Furthermore, it is important for these inputs to have the right relationship to one another and be in the right proportions. A key component that helps to monitor this mix is the oxygen sensor, which is responsible for measuring the percentage of oxygen present in the fuel/air mixture. Too much or too little oxygen can cause decreased performance so the sensor transmits information to the computerized control system that informs components such as the fuel injectors how to adjust. Furthermore, the sensor plays an important role in monitoring exhaust fumes. If there is too much uncombusted fuel left in the exhaust after it has passed through the engine, emissions will be more harmful to the environment. A well calibrated sensor can ensure that this is kept in check. For great deals on parts that keep your car running reliably, check out PartsGeek.com.

Oxygen Sensor

Nobody likes to see a check engine light go on. One of the most common culprits of this alarming dashboard alert is a failed O2 sensor. Get this fixed as soon as possible. If left alone, you face an extensive list of problems, not the least of which are:

  • Reduced power
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Failed emissions tests

The oxygen sensor in your vehicle works together with the computer and the other sensors to modify the levels of fuel and air in your combustion chambers. This ratio of this mixture is a large part of the performance and efficiency of your engine. Your vehicle probably has two to four of these sensors. Look for them mounted up and downstream of your catalytic converter along your exhaust lines.

We have Motorcraft, Bosch, Denso, Walker Products, Walker, AC Delco, ACERA, Delphi, NTK, NGK, Beck Arnley, Standard Motor Products, Spectra Premium, Mopar and Auto 7 oxygen sensors at PartsGeek.com. We're proud of our reputation for shipping parts fast and having great discounts. We also offer a 30-day return policy, so order today.

What is an oxygen sensor?

When gas is burned in your combustion sensors and energy is created, there are many possible byproducts:

  • Unburned gasoline
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Carbon dioxide
  • Oxygen
  • Soot

These are expelled through your exhaust system. Your vehicle monitors the exhaust gasses coming from your engine in order to keep an eye on whether the combustion process is working correctly. One of the main tools it uses to do this is your oxygen sensor.

Your engine control unit gets data directly from this O2 sensor unit. Depending on the information it gets, it tells the various fuel system components to feed more air or more fuel into the engine. This constant monitoring and adjustment gives you maximum power and fuel efficiency.

One thing that confuses many drivers is the location of the O2 sensor. That's because a given vehicle might have several of these parts. For example, you might have two for each bank of cylinders: one before and one after your catalytic converter in your exhaust line. Tell them apart by knowing the terminology. Upstream and downstream refer to the position of the sensor relative to the catalytic converter. There are also other terms specific to vehicle and parts manufacturers that refer to which bank of cylinders your sensors monitor. Check your maintenance manual for more information, or make sure you have a part number before you make an order.

How much is a new O2 sensor?

This depends on the age of your vehicle, among other factors. Older vehicles might be able to use universal oxygen sensors. New cars and trucks need specific parts. Overall, these parts should run somewhere between $25-280.

What are the signs of a bad oxygen sensor?

You lose performance and efficiency from a bad oxygen sensor. That's because this part is responsible for part of the calculations of fuel-to-air ratios in your engine. You're also more than likely to see a check engine light when these parts fail. You might also fail an emissions test if your O2 sensor isn't working.

Another sign of sensor failure might be a little less intuitive: fluid leaks. Your oxygen sensor is bound to fail if it's exposed to coolant or oil leaks. Keep your gaskets and hoses in good working order to avoid having to repeatedly replace your sensors.
