The ignition switch in a vehicle is used to start the vehicle's engine. It does this by allowing an electrical charge from the vehicle's battery to travel to the spark plugs, which transmit an electrical current into the engine and ignite the fuel/air mixture in the engine. The switch also supplies electricity to accessories such as the radio. On most vehicles, the ignition switch can only be operated by a key, although some older-model cars can be started with a button or crank. There are three types of ignition systems. Antique automobiles use a mechanical ignition system, which relies on mechanical moving parts to transmit the current from the ignition switch to the engine. Ignition systems built after 1974 are called electronic ignition systems, because they were refined by replacing some components with electronic parts. Electronic systems are more reliable than mechanical systems, and they also create a superior spark. The longer, fatter spark created by electronic ignitions allows for a superior fuel mixture and better gas mileage as a result. Electronic ignition systems still rely on some moving parts, such as a device to distribute the electrical current to the spark plugs in the correct order. In the 1980s, automakers began using distributorless ignition systems. These are sold-state electronic systems which require no moving parts, and they are therefore much more reliable than the older systems. No matter what kind of ignition system a vehicle has, a failed ignition switch will prevent the vehicle from starting. Unfortunately, there are many other reasons why a vehicle could fail to start, so failed ignition switches are not always easy to diagnose. Symptoms can include an engine that will not crank when the key is turned or a starter than keeps running after the key is released. These symptoms can also be caused by other problems such as weak battery or corroded connections, so it may be necessary to obtain a mechanic's diagnosis. If jiggling the key in the ignition fixes the problem, then the ignition switch is probably the culprit.
