The heart of the system is the distributor, which turns on and off the primary electrical current in order to ensure that each spark plug receives the energy it needs. On top of the distributor shaft is a rotor, which passes very close to the contacts of the spark plug leads as it spins in order to power the system. Additionally, the ignition control unit is a key player in the process, ensuring that all the components work together successfully.
