In your vehicle, one of the most important mechanical systems is the one that allows you to steer the car. This should come as no surprise: steering a car is one of the basic requirements for making the thing usable. In order to ensure that you and your passengers are safe, it is critical that you keep the steering mechanism in good condition. The steering mechanism is comprised of a number of components. One key part is the idler arm, which is a pivoting support that works with the steering linkage itself. You’ll generally find this component in any car or truck with parallelogram steering. The key parts of this arm are a rod, a bracket, and a ball joint. The arm is generally attached to the vehicle’s frame via the bracket, then to the center link via the ball joint. Its purpose is to hold the center link at the proper point. This pivoting support can prove problematic: the pivot function that is so critical to the part’s proper function also makes it incredibly vulnerable to wear. To keep your steering mechanism in great condition, you’ll want to properly lubricate all fittings with a grease gun every time you change your oil.
