Your car’s internal combustion engine is filled with a wide variety of different parts and components. These individual parts must be engineered to work together to be part of a larger, fully functioning system. One key component of an engine, then, is the head gasket, which sits between the engine block and the cylinder head. This gasket is charged with sealing the cylinders to make sure that maximum compression is achieved and that no coolant or engine oil leaks into the cylinders. In the world of engines, there are many gaskets at work – but this one is the most critical. Its position within the combustion chamber means that it must be able to stand up to intense heat and pressure. As a general rule, then, this gasket is an “MLS” (or “Multiple Layers Steel”) gasket coated with a rubber-like substance that adheres to the surrounding components. It is also possible to find this gasket made of solid copper, a graphite or asbestos composite, or silicon rubber. This last type is known as “elastomeric,” and it includes a combination of steel and silicon in its design.
