In a gasoline-powered engine, function is kick-started by spark plugs, which set off (not surprisingly) a spark that ignites gasoline and oxygen to begin a chain reaction of explosions. It is these explosions, then, that actually provide power to the automobile. In a diesel engine, however, the process is different. Starting a diesel engine relies on compression. As the piston in the engine rises, the air in the cylinder is compressed. This causes the air temperature in the area to rise. By the time the piston is fully raised, then, the air pressure is quite high. At this point in the process, a mist of diesel fuel is sprayed into the cylinder and instantly combusts. The piston is forced back downwards and power is generated. Once the engine is up and running, the heat from the engine function is sufficient to keep the process moving. When the engine is cold, however (as it is when it has been left to sit overnight in cool weather), there is not enough heat for the fuel to ignite. This is where glow plugs come in. This component heats up in much the same way as the heating element in a toaster. The cylinder is thus warmed, and the process can start moving with sufficient heat and power.
