Your car relies on two key inputs to power its internal combustion engine. The first, oxygen, is easily obtainable from the surrounding environment. The second input, however, is gasoline – which (unfortunately) isn’t exactly floating around in thin air. Together, oxygen and gasoline form the raw materials for the explosions that are responsible for actually providing power for the vehicle. In order for your car to run smoothly, then, there must be a steady supply of gasoline available. This is why your car has a fuel tank, which you studiously fill and refill at the pump each week. The tank, which is generally about 15 gallons in capacity, is connected to the fuel injection system and, eventually, the engine, by a series of fuel lines and hoses. Today’s cars have a complicated system of mechanical fuel delivery that requires the cooperation of a number of disparate elements. Gas moves from the tank along the fuel lines to the fuel injector, where it is mixed with oxygen and delivered to the engine. Any number of things can go wrong in this process.
