The fuel pump is the device that moves fuel from a vehicle's gasoline tank to the engine. It is a necessary component in most vehicles, although in older models (especially motorcycles) the gasoline may be gravity-fed to the engine. In most modern vehicles, the fuel pump is electric. It is not typically activated by the ignition switch, because the fuel pump requires a higher electrical current load than most ignition systems can handle. This is why most vehicles use a fuel pump relay instead; it is designed for the high electrical current required by the pump. In newer models, the relay is controlled by the electronic control unit (ECU), which is the computerized "brain" in modern vehicles. Many ECUs are programmed to shut down the fuel pump relay if the vehicle rolls over or suffers a hard impact. This prevent the fuel lines from leaking and causing an explosion. The ECU may also shut down the relay if the oil pressure in the engine is too low, because this can indicate engine failure and the potential for an engine fire. In most cases where the fuel pump appears to be broken, it is actually the fuel pump relay that is causing the problem. Symptoms of a bad relay can include an engine that will not start or run correctly, or an engine that takes a long time to start. To check the fuel pump relay, it will first be necessary to locate it. Depending on the model of the vehicle, the relay may be under the dashboard, on the fire wall behind the engine, near the fuel tank or in the fuse box under the hood. If the relay is hot to the touch or smells like it is burnt, it should be replaced. If the vehicle stalls, then restarts later, this could also a sign of a bad relay; strange noises coming from the pump can be a bad sign as well. If you see none of these signs but still have trouble starting the vehicle, take it to a mechanic to check the switch's electrical current.

Fuel Pump Relay

A lot of engineering goes into those effortless starts in contemporary vehicles. The fuel pump relay does its part by providing the power necessary to get your fuel pump started. Even though it only functions for a short time when you're starting your car, this part still wears out relatively quickly. Preserve your fuel pump by checking the relay regularly and replacing it when necessary.

Your electric fuel pump relay is a small box, usually mounted to your fuse box in your dashboard or in the engine compartment. Inside the plastic cover, there's a sophisticated circuit that delivers power to your fuel pump from the battery when you're starting your vehicle. This gives your fuel pump the power it needs to get started before engine takes over electricity supply duties. Without it, your pump won't start and the engine won't run correctly.

Get your fuel pump relay from us at PartsGeek.com, and choose from the best brands. We're proud to carry Airtex, Kaehler Germany, Genuine, APA/URO Parts, Vemo, AC Delco, Programa Premium, Delphi, Hella, Professional Parts Sweden, Autobest, Motorcraft and Spectra fuel system components. We also carry millions of other parts and accessories manufactured by leading companies around the world, all at up to 80% off of list prices. Get the part you need every time thanks to our 30-day return policy.

What is a fuel pump relay?

Your fuel pump needs power to run. Normally, it runs on the electricity provided by a device in your vehicle. Unfortunately, that electricity-generating device only works when your engine is operating, and your engine needs gas from the fuel pump to run. The answer to this seemingly impossible situation is provided by your relay. Your electric fuel pump relay sends electricity to jump-start your fuel pump when you start up your car.

Look for a small box in your fuse compartment, usually either under your hood or in the passenger cabin. The fuel pump relay should have plugs connecting it to your vehicle's electrical system. Most relays have the part name printed on the protective housing. Inside the relay is a circuit designed to send electric current from your battery to your fuel pump. It only activates when your key is in a certain position in the ignition, starting your pump so you can get on the road.

How much is a replacement fuel pump relay?

What you pay for a relay varies widely depending on:

  • The type of vehicle you're driving
  • Design of the relay
  • Manufacturer of the part

Expect to pay somewhere between $20-110 on average at our discounts, or $50-270 for full price parts.

What are the signs of a broken fuel pump relay?

Common problems with your electric fuel pump relay involve sending too much electricity or not sending any. These are usually caused by:

  • A worn-out circuit
  • Heat damage to the relay
  • Corrosion
  • Oxidation on the electrical connection

These problems can lead to several symptoms and complications:

  • Damage or failure to the fuel pump
  • Cranking without starting
  • Delayed or rough starts
  • Slowing or stopping without braking, changing gears or turning off the engine
