Replacement Flex Joint Information

The exhaust system of a car is a network of tubes, hoses, and passageways. This complex roadmap allows your vehicle to emit gasses that it no longer needs via a system that can help monitor and maintain those materials. Because the exhaust system is filled with such a variety of tubes, however, it is critical that you ensure that the joints between the hoses are secure. Exhaust systems are designed so that they do not leak in places where they’re not supposed to – but one bum seal can ruin the integrity of the entire system. Flex joints are generally used throughout exhaust systems to fill gaps and stop any potential leaks. Often made of knitted wire mesh, these joints absorb the dynamic movement that is inherent in any exhaust system whenever the engine turns over or the brakes are hit hard. Rigid pipe connections lead to leaks, vibration, and unwanted noise – but the right wire mesh joint will keep each connecting hose and pipe secure. Plus, high-quality components will resist damage from water, heat, and corrosive exhaust fumes – critical features for longevity in a tough environment. You can find great exhaust system joints in PartsGeek.com’s extensive automotive warehouse.

Flex Joint

Vibrations and shuddering from the driveshaft while accelerating and decelerating aren't normal. They're damaging to your bearings, and they pose a long-term threat to your engine and your transmission. Ensure the seamless operation and long life of your vehicle's most critical systems by switching out your driveshaft joints at the first signs of wear. You need your joint to have maximum flexibility and complete integrity to continue enjoying your smooth ride.

Once you start to see cracks or frayed edges on your flex joint, it's time to act. That's because these visual signs mean your joint is in the final stage of its natural life cycle. From the moment you install the part, the rubber material starts breaking down due to heat, corrosion, oxidation and the stress of normal operation. Once you start seeing signs of wear and feeling vibrations, it means the joint is no longer completely performing its primary function of connecting your driveshaft to your engine.

Order a flex joint from one of the worlds top manufacturers, right here at PartsGeek.com. We have aftermarket parts from Lemfoerder, Beck Arnley, Febi, APA/URO Parts, Meyle, Dorman and Genuine. We also carry OEM parts for exact factory replacement. We have a great selection of driveshaft couplings along with millions of other parts and accessories at discount prices. Order today, because your purchases are covered by a 30-day return policy.

What is a flex joint?

Driveshaft joints are responsible for joining your engine to your driveshaft. This allows you to use power you get from internal combustion to drive your car and power your accessories. There are many different types of engine couplings, but they all have similar purposes:

  • Connecting your engine to your driveshaft
  • Reducing vibrations between your transmission and engine
  • Compensating for misalignment that happens when you drive

A flex joint is a type of driveshaft coupling, also known by the brand name Giubo. It's made out of rubber with special fibers added during the molding process, similar to the material used in tires. These parts usually look like disks with holes on both sides. Look for your vehicle's flex joint where your driveshaft meets your engine flange.

How much is a flex joint?

You should expect to pay somewhere between $60-240 if you're paying full price for your flex joint. Consider whether or not the joint you order comes with the hardware you need to connect it to your engine and driveshaft.

What happens when driveshaft joints fail?

Driveshaft joints connect your driveshaft to the engine assembly. They also reduce vibrations that come from misalignments, so both of these functions are compromised as the part begins to deteriorate. Some of the early signs are:

  • Buzzing vibrations during acceleration and deceleration
  • Slack and clunks while shifting gears

If you have either of these problems, or suspect a transmission or driveshaft problem, check out your flex joint. It should look smooth on the edges, with no stray fibers and no cracks in the surface. If it's damaged, fix it fast to avoid:

  • Damage to your bearings
  • Unnecessary stress on your engine
  • A dangerously loose driveshaft
