Replacement Exhaust System Information
The exhaust system routes waste gases from the engine to the outside air. Your car’s exhaust system consists of five parts: The exhaust manifold, the oxygen sensor, the catalytic converter, the muffler and the exhaust pipe. Each has a crucial role to play. The exhaust manifold collects exhaust gases from each engine cylinder and puts them in one pipe. Exhaust manifolds are usually made of cast iron, but can also be made of steel aluminum or stainless steel. Exhaust manifolds are typically designed to hush exhaust noise. The oxygen sensor measures how much oxygen is in the exhaust. It talks to the engine’s computer, which adds or subtracts fuel so the fuel injectors get the right mixture for maximum fuel economy. Depending on the manufacturer, the oxygen sensor may be in the exhaust manifold or further down the line in the exhaust pipe. The catalytic converter, mounted between the exhaust manifold and the muffler, is a pollution-control device that takes harmful carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons and converts them to harmless water vapors. The muffler muffles sound. Most mufflers use baffles to dissipate the exhaust and reduce noise. The exhaust pipe runs the entire length of the car and connects all of the other parts together.
