Deep inside your car’s engine, various functions and outputs are dependent on a process called exhaust gas recirculation, or EGR. The principle of EGR is fairly simple: it aims to recirculate a portion of the exhaust gas produced by the engine back into the engine cylinders. What does this accomplish? When recirculated exhaust gas is mixed with new, incoming air, the adiabatic flame temperature and the peak combustion temperature are lowered. Keeping combustion temperatures low inhibits the formation of NOx, or nitrogen oxide, a major emission of automotive engines. The EGR process is managed by an EGR valve, which is responsible for regulating and timing this flow. Exhaust gas is captured and piped back into the engine cylinders at a regulated rate, ensuring that the process moves forward smoothly and efficiently.
