Here’s something pretty basic: you want your car to start right every time. The last thing you want as a driver is an ignition system with a relaxed work ethic. A car that doesn’t start 100% of the time is a car that is worth nothing but trouble. A critical component of every vehicle, then, is the ignition system. The ignition system is in many ways ruled by the distributor, which routes high-voltage electricity from the ignition coil to the spark plugs, thereby starting the combustion process in an internal combustion engine. In a sense, this component is the delivery system by which the engine receives the impetus to start. The distributor is generally powered by a gear on the camshaft, and it may receive additional input from the oil pump. One small but critical component of this system is the distributor cap, which houses the rotating arm or rotor and keeps it securely fixed atop the distributor shaft.
