Your car is filled with systems – but the one that literally keeps your car up and moving is the suspension. The suspension plays the critical role of entirely supporting your car and keeping it lifted up off the road: this collection of struts, joints, and pivots provides the framework upon which the rest of your car is built. The control arm plays a key part in this process. It is a flat piece of metal, approximately triangular in shape, that pivots at two points: a bushing and a ball joint. The end that is connected to the bushing is the wider end of the triangle, and the connection joins the component to the car’s frame. The end that is connected to the ball joint is the narrower end of the triangle, which is attached to the steering knuckle. Due to its shape, this part is often called the wishbone or A-arm – which is why two of these are known as a double-wishbone suspension. Another style of suspension uses only one A-arm per wheel as one portion of a full MacPherson strut suspension.
