When it comes to your car or truck's camshaft, timing is everything. This important device controls the opening and closing of exhaust valves. As a result, the cams are responsible for delivering the mixture of air and exhaust gases. Too much air results in wasted fuel, while too little air results in reduced power. To ensure the engine keeps running on al cylinders, auto manufacturers now use something called a camshaft position sensor. This little device electronically collects real-time data about the shaft's speed, acceleration, deceleration and position and sends it to the engine computer. This is done through either a magnetic or hall effect sensor. Based on the results, the computer adjusts fuel/air mixture amounts, ignition timing and other factors. The result is a vehicle that delivers maximum performance and fuel efficiency at all speeds and torques. This component can become damaged over time.
