Ever since the invention of the automobile, new technologies have been applied with the goal of bringing these hulking masses of metal to a stop. Invented in 1902, brake drum technology is one of the oldest and most successful attempts. Though the design has largely been replaced by disc brakes, the technology is still used for some automobile applications. The braking system works by pressing a set of brake pads against a rotating drum that is connected to the wheel. The mechanism can either be attached to the front or rear wheels. However, manufacturers typically choose the rear wheels, as less friction and heat builds up in the back tires. The excessive heat generated by the technology is one reason it has been overshadowed by disc brakes. Due to friction and heating, brake drums have the tendency to wear out faster and result in damage to nearby components. Due to a process called regenerative braking, these effects are greatly reduced in hybrid vehicles. This has resulted in a bit of a resurgence in the technology, with it now being found in popular vehicles such as the Toyota Prius.
