A lot goes into making sure the wheels on the bus (or car) go round and round. However, the actual mechanism that turns the wheels is known as the car axle. This component is essentially a central shaft that connects the front or rear wheels together. The most basic type, which is rarely used these days, features a straight beam design. This simple assembly serves to support the weight of the vehicle, as well as connect the wheels for uniform rotation. A drive assembly adds a differential into the design of the shaft. A CV version builds on this by also including a transmission in the interior of the shaft. This results in the component being able to deliver torque transfer and gear changing capabilities. For this reason, CV axles are the most popular type of construction for modern vehicles. Braking and steering mechanisms can be applied to the wheel wells of the component to change the car's direction or slow down.
