Fuel combustion is the mechanism that gives an engine the energy to move. Two necessary elements are necessary to create combustion – oxygen and fuel. Combining the right amount of fuel with the right amount of oxygen is essential to maintaining maximum engine performance. To help regulate the amount of air entering the combustion chamber, your car takes advantage of a little piece of equipment called the air mass sensor. This component monitors the amount of air entering the fuel injection system and feeds its findings to the engine computer. The computer compares these results with the amount of fluid flow in the engine and tells the sensor to adjust airflow accordingly. Your car or truck's engine features either a vane meter or hot wire sensor. The two types differ in the mechanism used to measure airflow entering the system. A vane meter utilizes a spring-loaded arm while the hot wire uses a heated wire. Both use temperature and air volume to calculate air mass.
