Minivans have gotten a bad rap as being stodgy “soccer-mom” vehicles, but the Nissan Quest is a bit of a departure, particularly the late models that offer a more streamlined, estate-car profile. One thing is certain; it provides plenty of room for the family and all their stuff, has enough power to do the job – and doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Of course, if regular maintenance is neglected, it can wind up being very costly indeed. Even the best engineered machinery has components that wear out and need replacing periodically; failure to do so can been big repair bills up the road. This is easy to avoid, however; just pay attention to the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule and use only good quality parts, even if they cost a bit more – because that's an investment that will quickly pay for itself.

Nissan Quest

In 1986, Nissan and Ford entered into a joint venture under the code name of VX54. The purpose of this team was to develop an all new competitor in the minivan market. The Quest was launched in the United States in 1992 and sold about 1350 units that year. The Quest did not fair well in Japan either, running into government imposed weight and size restrictions. Ford's influence was very apparent in the Quest engine. Although the Quest used the Nissan VG30E 3.0 liter, 151 HP base, Ford required some interesting changes such as an oil sensor light and moving the oil filter assembly so that it could be reached more easily. Mechanically, the engine was redesigned to include "non-interference" design to protect the engine should the timing belt break.

In 1998, the Quest launched its second generation, including additions such as a sliding side door. However, the rear bench seat was still not removable and space flexibility was an issue compared to other minivans of the time. The engine was upgraded to 3.3 liters which added much needed power. These upgrades were not sufficient to rescue the Quest. Among some of the worst Nissan Quest reviews, Consumer Reports compared the Quest to five other minivans and rated it as the worst of the bunch. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ranked the Quest as "Terrible". Perhaps the unlucky owner of this generation of Quest would do well to keep a good Nissan Quest parts diagram handy. Even easier, contact a reputable parts supplier like PartsGeek.com.

The 1999 - 2002 models of the Quest used an optical distributors that were especially prone to failure. A Yahoo group for the Quest and Quest auto parts noted that the Rich Porter distributor was less prone to failure than the factory installed component. In 2001, Quest sales fell to about 30,000 representing a 32% decrease in sales. As a result, no Quest models were offered for sale in 2003. Nissan and Ford ended their partnership and by 2004, Nissan was producing a new Quest based on the Altima and Maxima platforms. Many improvements to the Nissan Quest interior such as fold in the floor seats, DVD players, all power sliding side doors and a rear power door and a powerful 3.5 liter engine improved the Quest's overall status, but it still suffered from quality issues. Sales declined from a high in 2004 of over 46,000 to just over 8,000 by 2009.

The Quest forth generation model was introduced in the United States in 2010. It now competes with models such as the Kia Sedona. Continuing quality and design problems forced the Quest to stop sales in Canada in 2014. Keeping an unwanted record intact, in 2015 the IIHS rated the Quest crash test results as one of the worst it had ever conducted. Unfortunately, the long record of problems with the Quest makes it likely the owner will never need a Nissan Quest performance parts list.
