The name of the Mitsubishi Galant is taken from the word gallant, meaning “chivalrous” - which in turn comes from the French word cheval, meaning “horse.” Were the folks at Chrysler aware of this when they licensed the design in the early 1970s and called their version the “Colt”? Either way, it's been popular enough to sustain itself through nine generations, even if it has evolved from a small, sub-compact economy car into a mid-sized sedan over the past forty years. With proper maintenance, you can keep your Mitsubishi Galant going for another forty. This means switching out parts and changing fluids and filters at regular intervals as recommended by the manufacturer – and don't be lured into “false economy” with “bargain” components. Chances are they're no bargain in the long run.

Mitsubishi Galant

The story of the Mitsubishi Galant spans more than four decades. First released in 1969 as a compact sedan, the Galant eventually grew in size, becoming a mid-size vehicle by the time production ended in 2012. It was the first Mitsubishi vehicle to be sold in the U.S., when the Chrysler Corporation began importing it and offering it to the American public as the Dodge Colt. The model lineup included a two-door coupe, a four-door sedan and a station wagon. This was a vehicle built for economy, not power; the engine was a four-banger displacing a mere 1.6 liters, coupled with a four-speed manual transmission (a three-speed automatic was available as an option). At first, this engine put out 100 horsepower, but that was cut by almost 20% in 1972, when the Environmental Protection Agency issued more stringent emissions standards. In the wake of massive oil shortages and steep hikes in gasoline prices that year, the Mitsubishi Galant, in its incarnation as the Dodge Colt, competed successfully against other American economy cars such as the Chevy Vega, Ford Pinto and AMC Gremlin.

In 1973, the Galant got a facelift. The formerly angular body became more rounded, and the original double headlights were replaced by single ones. A larger, slightly more powerful engine was made available as an option, as well as a more economical five-speed manual transmission. Five years later, the Galant/Colt had turned into a sleek-looking hatchback, powered by the Mitsubishi Orion 4G33 1.4 liter, overhead cam four-cylinder motor. Although this produced only 70 horsepower, it offered the highest fuel economy of any make or model that year, particularly when mated to the innovative KM110 four-speed transmission. This option, known as the "Twin Stick," employed a two-speed transfer case, that in essense provided the vehicle with eight forward speeds.

By the 1990s, the U.S. version of the Galant had become the sleek-looking Eagle Summit. A more powerful 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine raised te horsepower to 82 and gave the vehicle a top speed of nearly 100 miles per hour. The vehicle continued to be sold in the U.S. under the Colt name until the mid-1990s, when Dodge replaced it with the Neon. Galants built during the early part of that decade did not fare particularly well in crash tests; in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tests, the vehicle only scored two stars in Frontal Driver Impact tests (the passenger's side did somewhat better). Models from the late 1990s had better results, scoring from three to four stars in all categories tested.

Most drivers have been very happy with their Galants, especially when it comes to gas mileage in the face of gas prices ranging from $2.50 - $4.00 a gallon over the past several years. Few serious problems have been reported over the years. Power is still an issue for some, who address this with Mitsubishi Galant performance parts. In any event, normal wear and tear is still something that drivers need to pay attention to, so it's a good idea to have a reliable source of Mitsubishi parts and accessories.
