Mazda 626

Also known as the Mazda Capella (named for a star in the constellation Auriga the Charioteer), the Mazda 626 first arrived in U.S. showrooms in 1979 and continued rolling off assembly lines for the next 23 years. In the beginning, it was a compact, but evolved into a mid-sized sedan, its most popular incarnation. For awhile, there was a hatchback model available as well. The 1979 model was the first to have a split rear seat that could be folded down, greatly expanding the trunk space.

Although it was originally of Japanese manufacture, by the late 1980s, the vehicle contained a great many U.S.-manufactured components - enough to qualify as "Made in America." Unfortunately, that was not altogether a good thing, as the Ford-designed automatic transmission (also used on the Ford Probe) wound up having a number of issues. The Ford Motor Company had partnered with Mazda during that period, using the 626 platform as the basis for the Telstar and the Probe.

The original Mazda engine created quite a stir when it was first introduced in the early 1970s. Known as the Wankel Rotary (for its designer, German engineer Felix Wankel), this engine had no pistons or cylnders. Instead, a triangular rotor moves around a stationary crankshaft. Combustion takes place in chambers that are formed by part of the engine housing, sealed in by one of the rotor's faces. These engines were lightweight and put out a great deal of power for their size. One of the selling points is that the Wankel engine had fewer moving parts to wear out. However, fuel economy wasn't the best. Today, the Wankel engine is available only for race cars and kit-car builders; it is no longer installed in commercial Mazda models.

Beginning in 1978, the 626 offered three standard piston-engine options, which were versions of the Mazda F/MA engine. The smalleset one was a 1.6 liter four banger, while the larger and more powerful engine displaced 2.0 liters. In the middle was a 1.8 liter version. Tranversely mounted, these engines were mated to a four or five-speed manual or three-speed automatic transmission and a rear-wheel drive configuration.

In 1982, the next generation of the 626 abandoned rear-wheel drive and was built on the front-wheel drive GC platform. The same gasoline-powered engines remained available, but a 2.0 liter diesel engine was offered as well. The following year, the Mazda 626 was named Car of the Year by Wheels magazine and was awarded the title of Import Car of the Year by Motor Trend. Production of the 626 continued until 2002.

Generally, owners have given the Mazda 626 good ratings for overall reliability. However, 1998 models were prone to transmission failure at around 70,000 (the typical lifespan of a Mazda is over 200,000 miles). That's when a source for Mazda 626 transmission parts comes in handy. While Mazda 626 used parts can be obtained from wrecking yards, it's possible to find Mazda 626 parts for sale at a discount at online parts suppliers such as PartsGeek.com.
